OLIVER and the UGLIES

Oliver is 5 1/2 months old right now and he is starting to get to the stage of getting the teenaged uglies. The puppy coat is starting to turn brown (dead hair) and he is starting to blow it due to the change in weather. Spoke with my breeder today and she said to continue to brush and trim the feet, fro, and ears until we see them at regionals in October. No prob there......At that time I will get another lesson in grooming. Extreme grooming. LOL She said to continue to bathe him once per month. Is there anything else I can do to continue to get rid of the dead coat until then?

Blow with high velocity dryer, and comb, comb comb (line comb, down to the skin to get the undercoat out).

But if you use a metal comb (which is what I use), use some sort of "finishing spray" to completely dampen the coat (and coat it with conditioners, etc). Never use a metal comb on dry hair. It'll break it.

I made friends with a rake and Mars Coat King as Obie was losing his puppy coat since the weather was turning warm at the same time... double whammy of shedding. I've been fairly conservative with the MCK but the combo proved invaluable. I found if I didn't get the loose hair out he would mat and get hot spots in a heartbeat. Glad we've mostly passed that stage now! At 9 1/2 months, he now has just a couple of spots of puppy fluff remaining.

Take lots of pictures ... you will look back on this time and laugh :)
I agree...Rocky was one ugly dog for a while there. It didn't help that he had some skin issues as well. If I have time later I think I will post some pics of him in his ugly teenage years and see if anyone else has any of their dogs going through the uglies.

:goofy: Let's share ugly photos...well, I hate to call the uglies, because they are still adorable. Let's share "awkward stage" photos

Yep...I use Chris Christensen Ice on Ice. I get it from the CC website since it's the same price everywhere I've checked.

It coats the hair and protects it. It's also got sunscreen, and helps a lot with keeping dogs tangle/mat free.

I use it after a bath when the dogs are damp (drench the feathers) ... then dry them. And I use it (spray/mist it on) on a totally dry dog when I'm combing.

It's not silicone, so isn't slippery or greasy.

Someone told us Sky was in her "ugly duckling phase". We covered her ears and told she was BEAUTIFUL! LOL Glad to hear this is normal. She's growing like a colt! All gangly some days. Thanks for the Ice on Ice suggestion.
