The Newfoundland Club of America's Oldest Living Newf Award nominations are due by February 15th and can be sent in by e-mail. Here are the details:

Each year the NCA recognizes the oldest living Newfoundland. This program will recognize any Newfoundland who has reached the age of 14, with a special honor and recognition at the Annual Meeting for the oldest dog during 2013.
If you would like to apply for this recognition the deadline is February 15, 2014. Please email nominations to Ingrid Lyden, Awards Chair.
You must include:
-copy of AKC registration
-letter from veterinarian stipulating that the dog is still alive or providing date of passing information
-all owners' names (at least one must be a NCA member)
Winner will be notified after via mail, and recognized at the Annual Meeting. All qualifying 14 year old Newfoundlands will receive a personalized commemorative certificate.

Not that we could enter anyway, but guess unregistered dogs or non NCA can't be alive. :(
Certainly not a perfect system but the best that we have.

If anyone has a Newf that is 13 years and expected to make it to 14 or more I suggest they register their Newf with the AKC if not already so. As for NCA membership, if the owner is not an NCA member, they can either join the club or put their Newf in a co-ownership with someone who is a member.

As for unregistered dogs there is no proof of birth date or pure bred status so you can't fault the NCA for that.

This is one of the few bellwethers that we have on the progress of the longevity of Newfoundlands so until something better comes along we should support it.

Go Gracie! My Rafe will be 9 this June and he is still not at all gray or acting the least bit old. I'm hoping someday he will be able to compete in this. I just lost my Golden a month ago and he was only 13. I miss him SO much and although he did die of old age in his sleep I thought he was pretty young for a Golden.
