Odd question

Goofy Newfy

Let's begin by saying, I feel totally weird for writing this but am very curious to know if anyone else has encountered this type of behavior. We have a 4 year old Newf, and a 4 1/2 month old GSD. They get along great and love to wrestle and tumble with each other, but there is a catch. Our Newf will literally lay down on the puppy. And, he actually looks pleased when he does it. Have you ever seen a dog surprised and very interested by something in the grass for example? They get this really excited stance/expression to their whole body? Well, this is the look he gets. Last time, he was laying on her, she was upside down with only her back legs extending from in between where his front paws were (I couldn't see any other part of her body). She was frantically kicking (and making contact with his chest with her kicks), and yelping trying to get him off. He didn't care at all despite I know her claws are sharp.

I watched it for about 10 seconds to see if he would get up, or realize the yelping was cause to move. I finally told him to get up, which he did. Neither seemed bothered by it, but there is a definant weight differance between the two.

We have that, too, with our cats...or at least the one who will let Ada get close to him. I haven't figured it out other than it may be some sort of attempt to keep him from leaving so that she can play, but otherwise I'm clueless. (To be fair, the cat yowls just as loudly when she lays next to him and is being nice, so at least when she does this, the cat has a reason to yowl.) :)

If you figure it out, I'd love to hear why.

Koda used to do that to our other dog. I just don't think she realizes how big she is. I would say just try to supervise them when they are playing, although I doubt your Newf would kill a little puppy.

Not a clue, sorry. But my cat Mikey has been known to lay on a mouse he's caught when he's tired of playing with it, to "save" it for later.

Maggie will lay on him and my other cat Bethany, in a futile attempt to clean them. Because cats just don't do a good enough job apparently.

newfs do put their weight on other dogs...smaller works best...It is an' I'm the boss' thing....kind of a play thing...nothing serious

Cole does it when he's playing...or when he wants to play. One of our Goldens takes exception and will start snapping at him, but he never snaps back, or hurts the Golden (it's a male). He does slobber on his head. If the Golden gets really freaked, he'll just get up turn around and lay down again, until he's tired of the game (which happens when the Golden stops struggling and just lays there) and then he gets up and walks away, leaving the poor Golden with a sopping wet head wondering what that was all about.

The Golden doesn't know what's going on, and seems to think it's aggression, but it isn't. That's how he plays with the other Newfs, and they seem to "get it". They'll flip all around wrestling. It's the game of "who's on top" I think. Goldens don't play that way..... and couldn't if they wanted too. He's too heavy for them to ever get to be king of the hill.

He also picks up our cat and carries her around in his mouth. And she entices him to do it. Nothing like a slobbered on sopping wet cat.

Katy does this to the puppies she plays with.....She does not do it aggressively and the pups happily come back to her to play. She does seem to do it to the more exited pups. And she has never harmed any of the many puppies she has done it to in Puppy class. katy goes to all the puppy classes as the "big" dog for them to socialize with :)

Cosmo does this, especially with Snoopy. Never does really get rough or to the point where he hurts Snoopy. I think that they both realize what they can do without hurting each other. :D

Sophie does this to Vino, but it's to pin him down and keep him from nipping at her ears/jowls/legs/feathers. She rolls him and pins him. When she's done (it's only a matter of seconds), Vino is much better behaved :)

This sounds more like a play thing though than a hey you little imp, stop being so rough type thing.

Me neither!! These pictures are hysterical!!! In our new house Elvis and "boys" (our 3 cats) will be together a lot more than they are now. I'm anxious to see if this happens with them!
