Odd Behavior

Brody always liked his butt being scratched. Now when you scratch it, he starts licking the air and turning his body inward. Then he starts licking his tail. He doesn't look like he's in pain but it does look like something is wrong.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you are scratching an itchy area that is causing him to react, like he does not know how to handle the stimulation. Maybe it is just too sensitive and sort of drives him crazy in a way. I doubt he hates it, it is just probably too much. If there are no other symptoms or behaviors, I would not worry!

Myra does this.....not to worry you....but check the skin to make sure you don't have any hot spots or skin irritations....She also does it in her not allergy season so it could be ecstasy too!

Skin irritations I can handle! I thought it might be neurological problems.

I checked last night through his yak butt and couldn't find anything amiss. He is acting like he has fleas even though he's on Fontline.

Frontline stopped working for us last year and we had fleas along with Myra's allergy issues, I was pretty mad so I ended up writting a letter to Frontline and they sent me my money back. You could have fleas....keep double checking. Currently we are using Advantix and so far no issues other than Myra's skin allergy. Hope you find no problems at all and it's just ectasy!

Brody's weird behavior apparently was due to skin irritations. He now has a large hot spot by the base of his tail. He's really fighting me treating him (unlike him) and he's not himself. I think I'm going to have to bring him to the vet to be sedated and shaved.

I bought some Advantix and I'm hoping that works better than Frontline.

Dawn thank you for messaging me the pictures and information. Just now I pretended that I was just going to brush him so that I could get a better look at what was going on. I didn't notice any REDness. So I think it is starting to get better. I do remember that once these things heal, they do so fairly quickly.

I hate hotspots! I feel like I'm the cause of them.

What I've found interesting with our experience is that Myra being a Landseer...I can tell what's going to happen by the color of her skin. Don't get me wrong all dogs are different but in her white areas the skin get fire engine red and thanks to NN I discovered gold bond which has held alot of could be spots at bay. Good Luck and I think I need to see a picture of Brody...I think I've read some threads but not any pictures????

Well crap, the hot spot his back to being RED. To make matters even more enjoyable, he licked the powder and the antibacterial spray so now he has an upset stomach too. I've been letting him out since 4 this morning.

I haven't been posting pictures of Brody lately. I haven't even made it over to the photo thread in about a year. So many things to do, so little time.

Here is one:):

Hi there big guy! I just love him.

I use green tea on hot spots. I boil up 2 C of water and add 4 bags of green tea and let that cool to room temperature. I apply it to the hot spot two or three times a day with a cotton ball. It dries the hot spot and if the dog licks it, there is no danger of tummy upset. I refrigerate the tea in between using it.

I got this great idea from my holistic vet and it really works! Good luck!!!!

Poor Glory and Truman are allergic to flea bites too so we are dealing with this too. Ugh....the fleas are just out of control this year.
