Not wanting to eat

So, we are finally back from our trip to Mexico and it seems that Thor did not want to eat while we were away, so he got treats in his food to help him eat. We almost did not go because Thor got sick twice before we left, but it was just stomach bile and the vet told us to just feed him more because he was acting 100% normal and very playful. While, now that we are back, I have had to sit down with him and hand-feed him pieces of the chicken in his kibble and finally he will start to eat. Today he would not eat at all, but oh boy did he want my food, which I did not give in to. He finally ate his breakfast around 3pm without me having to help him along. He did get sick once while we were gone, but it was like before nothing but acid, no food.

Thor is acting normal. He is drinking water (not too much), very interested in our food, running around outside and wanting to play with us. I'm not seeing anything different other than him not wanting HIS food, but ours. Is this normal? I don't think there is a bitch in heat because he is not pacing around the house. Heck, he is sleeping in the living room right now.

Thoughts?

Ok, let me add that I gave in and gave him a milk bone around 8pm and then after finishing his cookie he went right for his bowl, so I gave hima.cup to help hold him over till breakfast. We think that maybe now that we are home he will start back eating right.

Elvis goes to my folk's house when we go on vacation. The first morning he was there he didn't eat right away. My mom felt sorry for him (she's not used to the Newf Eyes) and put a banana in his bowl. At dinner he waited again, and she added carrots. This continued every day while we were gone. He sure had my mom wrapped around his giant paw!

As long as he's acting normal - which you already said he was - I'd go back to feeding him like normal. When he's hungry, he'll eat.

I'd pick up his bowl after 15 minutes, if he skips a meal, he'll be ok and you may get your normal routine back. The bile throw up is something Myra does on an empty stomach but do you think he could have gotten into anything while you were away?

Maggie won't eat when we're not home. The last time I kenneled her, they spoon fed her wet food. He'll come around. Have you taken his temperature?

Sounds like Thor's trying to play you guys! Just put his food down, walk away and pick it back up after 15 or so minutes, even if he doesn't touch it. Guaranteed he'll start eating again. Whenever I hear stuff like this, I like to recount an episode of Emergency Vets where a woman brought in her Afghan Hound for not drinking. After a few days in the hospital, it turned out she was refusing water because her owner was putting yogurt in the water to convince her to drink. She was holding out for the good stuff  The vet staff "cured" her by simply refusing to put yogurt in her water. Needless to say, after a while of no yogurt water, she started drinking straight water again.

Thor did not get into anything while we were here or gone. See, he got sick like this twice about two days before we left and only once while we were gone. I found out that he was getting treats in his food to make him eat, so I'm figuring he wants that. He is acting normal nd has major interest in our food. lol So, I figure he is just being a butt. lol

Yep. Butt-itis. Maggie had a bad case of it when my Aunt gave her special homemade dog treats. She would go to her drawer and touch her nose to it to let me know she needed a treat, and then if I tried to give her something else, she would turn like it was the most offensive smelling ting, and then would touch her nose to the "special treat" bag.

And when I say touch, I mean slam her big schnozz down on it.

lol...when Sulley goes to the sitters, he gets half a slice of toast in his breakfast bowl, with butter and all the yumminess that comes with it. My friend's husband didn't know that trick and was very concerned when Sulley wouldn't eat his food one morning (normally it's gone it about 60 seconds). It was funny when we figured out why :)

Oh Thor has been pointing his nose up to his treats very often. I have a feeling someone was spoiling him way too much, but it's those darn eyes!!!! lol

Well, it seems that Thor just is not interested in breakfast. So, he gets four cups of food once a day and ends up eating it around dinner time. I find it weird that he no longer has interest in breakfast, but I'm not worried because he is eating and acting normal.

I swear newfs enjoy giving us grey hairs. I'm glad you figured out his new eating habits and that nothing is wrong.

Riggs won't eat if he is stressed in any way. A change in location, dog shows, people who leave after a weekend visit...bitches in heat and its a guaranteed 2 week food strike...
I do give him a little wet food on top of his food to make him want to eat his food more. A tbsp or so, and it does the trick most of the time. If we're away, I bring home a doggy bag of my food I ate at dinner and give it to him with his food, steak or chicken...spoiled? Yes, but he's not here for forever so I don't mind spoiling up my bears ;)

I would be concerned about the vomiting bile though. Just keep an eye on his stool, and activity levels.

We have not seem any bile in a week, that is something and his stools do look at. He is going poop at least once a day, but mostly twice a day.

A change is behavior, including not eating, is nothing to mess with. The fact that he was sick before you left and was finicky when you returned are red flags around here. It's normal to attribute changes to new treats or think he's playing you, (been there/done that) but that's usually not the case. IMHO if it crops up again, get a full work up done...

It's times like these when we need these guys to talk.

I have to say that Thor is doing just fine. Most days he does eat both meals, but today he only wanted dinner. He has not been sick at all in like two weeks and stools look great.

Some dogs do not eat normal when their owners are gone or in strange places. Snuffles is kindof like that.
My first Newf Zeus was HORRIBLE like that. I very rarely went out of town without him, but he went off his chow on a VERY regular basis. As in EVERY time we took a trip.
