I'm an avid reader of sci-fi, fantasy and historical novels when I can get the time. My favorites are the Game of Thrones books by George R. R. Martin and the Dragonbone Chair series by Tad Williams.
I didn't think I was interested in romance novels but through a mishap acquired the "Out of Time" series by Diana Gabaldon a few years ago. The book was situated on the end of the aisle (a featured selection) between the romance and sci-fi sections and it caught my eye because of the element of time travel -- I bought it because I thought it was a fantasy novel. (I turned my nose up at romance novels, you see.)
After I got part way through it, however, I began to suspect that it was probably a featured item from the romance aisle, not the sci-fi aisle (it was quite a bit steamier in spots than my usual reading
). Well, by then it was too late -- I was truly hooked and read the rest of the series voraciously. I also told my sisters, who told their friends and so on -- they were all hooked in spite of themselves. My sister told me that even one of her friends who is a bit of an intellectual snob and works in a writing-related job got hooked and was embarrassed to let anyone know. She would read the books on breaks when no one was looking and then hide them in the trash can so no one would know.
