I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this.
A little more than a year ago I wrote this somewhat silly but serious post about the Humane Society in Iqaluit: http://stilettosonthetundra.wordpress.com/2010/09/17/arctic-dogs/
The arctic has a serious problem with stray and abandoned dogs. There aren't any vets in the community so dogs remain intact.
I spent only a short time there volunteering, but it was enough to see the positive change inspired by the Iqaluit Humane Society's efforts. Many dogs who'd otherwise be dead, survived. And found homes.
I'm sad to hear the shelter has closed due to the severe strain on the entirely volunteer supported (and founded) organization. But, the IHS is now a semi-finalist for the Aviva Community fund. Winning is an important step to building a new shelter. If you have time, please vote for them here. (you can do it daily): http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf11210
Thank you.
