OK guys, I havent read ANY of the newfy childrens books out there :( and we want to start a collection for Katlin!! :D
SO SUGGEST AWAY!!!

Let me know what books you think we should get for her and why. And which ones we should start with that are more geared towards a younger child and then work our way up.

I only have 2 childrens books and they are 'Newf' by Marie Killilea and 'Old Dog Cora' by Consie Powell. My youngest is six, and we both love these books, they are both sweet stories filled with beautiful illustrations.

We have three daughters ages 8, 6, and 2. So far we have read Hugger to the Rescue, The Wreck of the Ethie, Star and the Storm and The Lighthouse Dog. My oldest liked Star and the Storm the best. We bought them for Christmas and hope to add to our collection. I hope this helps a little. I would like to find some for my 2 year old to enjoy.

I love "Old Dog Cora", "Emma and the Night Dogs" (which is about SAR and has gorgeous illustrations), "Newf" and "Seaman's Diary" (which again has great illustrations and is fairly new).

I'm sure I've missed some... I'll have to check my "library"!!!

And, don't forget to pick up a good illustrated copy of "Peter Pan", because Nana was a Landseer after all!!! Some publications have better illustrations than others... so be sure to check first!

Seaman's Diary is a big hit in our house, as is Peter Pan!!
Knowing my son has a landseer, they read Peter Pan during nap-time every school day until it was done, sweet huh? Then, they read Seaman's Diary. Elle is a big hit at school! *L*

For the younger crew try the short and sweet illusrated one called "Sailor - The Hangashore Newfoundland Dog" by Catherine Simpson
Illustrated by Joanne Snook-Hann. My little niece loves it.

Also "The Newfoundland Dog's Birthday Surprise" by Doreen Parmiter Canning, Illustrations by Angela J. Gillard. A little too simplistic but still, it's about a Newf!

For a marginal presence of the newfie dog try "A Newfoundland Alphabet" by Dawn Baker.

You can find them at http://www.tidespoint.com/books/1children.shtml

I agree with all the titles suggested so far. May I also suggest The Black Dog Who Went Into the Woods, if you ever have to deal with the death of a Newf. Also The Stray, by Betsey and Jamie Wyeth (son and daughter in law of the famous artist Andrew Wyeth). A Newf is one of many animals living in this fantasy town. His name is Boom Boom and he frightens the other animals with his big bark and they think he is the "Black Monster" until they learn to love him when he rescues one of them in a blizzard. Both books are out of print, but you can still find good used/or library copies on Amazon or Ebay. Anne
