Newfs in the paper

I sat down and read the Saturday paper. I always look at the puppies page( just for fun). In the paper I saw a adult female and male newf for sale for 100-50 dollars. I wanted to cry. I could not even bring myself to call. I get sick thinking what they have been through. This is in Des Moines register.

You should contact the nearest Newf club to you and tell them about this.
A lot of times Newf club Rescues will go in and get Newfs for sale like this.

Hey piercjo, I have been seeing more and more sub-500 dollar newf pups for sale in the gazette and register. I am not saying these are byb's or mill's or what...I have no idea. I will say that it likely leads to a ton of impulse buyers who have no concept of newf ownership.

I have to believe we are going to see more, and more, and more listings like you saw. I must confess that this is exactly how Dazy came into our life 5 years ago...she was one of these newspaper-posted adults. I called and saw the isolated life she was living and I sure couldnt walk away.

You are probably wise to not call, I do not allow myself to call on them anymore.

Dear Kris,

By not calling you blindfold your eyes to the problem, the best solution would be the one that Sue proposed about the nearest newf club.

If all of us did this everytime we say a newf add in the paper, a lot of newfs would have better lives.
Anyway, you are one of the braves that have adopted.
Here in distant Greece, newfs are a rare breed and it is impossible to find someone who would give an adult newf for adoption, or even sell them.

If anyone can help, am currently looking for a european newf rescue club just to have it in mind incase I hear something in my country.

Thank you

I live in Illinois, my wife will probably kill me, but I would be willing to drive there and get them, if I knew this was a real ad. I have to go to Cedar Rapids on the 18th of July anyway

Captnted: In doing a web search for the Des Moines Register, I came up with this contact info:
Telephone switchboard
Local: (515) 284-8000
Iowa: (800) 532-1455
Outside Iowa: (800) 247-5346

Their online classifieds may not yet include today's paper, because there weren't any Newfs listed, that I could find...but you may want to give them a call to ask about it.

A friend showed me an ad in the local paper last month for CHOCOLATE Newfoundlands at $795 each. I called to see if a '1' was missing. He said no, they were $795 and had one left that he was 15 weeks old. I got flustered and said I'd call back. I'm still kicking myself for not calling rescue, just in case. He's got to be a byb... I'll see if they've still got an ad in the paper this week and as our rescue for advice. Granted it's not $100, but it still worries me. Michelle

Don't kick yourself that you didn't call. These people are selling the newfs, not giving them away. Rescues are short enough on money, let alone to have to run around buying dogs. Yes, they COULD check it out and MIGHT be able to help these 2. But it's just like the newfies in the cages in pet stores. Your heart tells you to save that dog (for $500 or $800 or whatever) but if you do, you're actually hurting the cause. If the dog doesn't sell, the pet store has to take a loss and then might reconsider purchasing more for sale. Breaks my heart in two.

We have purchased a few from the paper becausue we knew who it was and wanted to get everything he had and work on shutting him down.

I do usually call the people advertising them though to see how old they are, if they have had vaccinations etc. Ther eis a new law in effect here and it's a snap to get puppies taken away if they are not being vaccinated. = )

If a Newf in the Petstore gets down to a low price where they are losing money, we will purchase it.

Most Newf Clubs I know will not buy a Newf. Most of your private Newf rescues will indeed do so.
