Does anyone know anything about Newfs as service dogs? I read the past articles in NewfTide on it, but does anyone know anything more? Stories, websites, etc.... Thoughts, opinions, concerns... Thanks!

Best,

Caroline

You mean service dogs as in SAR or as in personal assistance dog?
i sold a pup to a young man in a wheel chair, she will be assisting him in many small tasks, so far she is doing really well, he is very pleased with her.
i am sure they would be great, only thing is that they do require a lot of grooming, so the person would need assistance in the grooming part from family members or friends.

I mean as a service dog for the disabled

Could you email me more about that pup and how her training is going, if it's working out and so on, just more info in general? I have a friend who needs a service dog but wants a BIG one for mobility reasons, so I thought that the Newf's temperament would be good, but I don't really know all that much about it.

Thanks!

Caroline

I saw the photos you had posted, at least I think I did, of the young man in the wheelchair and his Landseer pup. The photos were great and they honestly just seemed made for each other.

Hey guys, when JJ came over once a week after the pups were born, when they were 4 weeks old, he was holding them, mocha seemed esp good with him, when he went to leave, she ran halfway across the yard crying, that is when i knew she was the one for him, there was an instant bond between the two, she is my avitar also. she is a sweet gir.
anyway, carol, if you want to email me
newfie@lsol.net
i will give you JJ email addy so you can email him, he is doing the training himself, he has some sort of network i think of helpers online.
also, his family and friends are so helpful and supportive, they are a wonderful bunch of people, all to willing to help with mochas care, of all the pups she is the one i am least worried about. besides wich, her penn hip results were fantastic, she rated inthe upper 90% with numbers .36 and .38
i am very pleased with her and JJ and his supportive family. ;)

Sar, it's wonderful that Mocha has such a special life with JJ. You must be SOooo proud of her.

Caroline, I've been told that the basic problem with any long haired dog used as a service dog is the upkeep. There's lots of brushing involved with a heavy coated dog, as well as other problems. The once favorite Golden Retrievers are being used less and less now. The Lab's coat is more suited to use by disabled people.

That's certainly not the problem for Mocha, though, it sounds like she has an entire family taking care of her needs. ;)

JJ and Mocha really did seem made for each other so I am so glad that it is working out! It sounds like they will have many meaningful years together.
