I don't have research info, only personal experience. We have had problems with inhalant allergies, like hay fever and an allergy to algae in lakes & ponds. We have found that few of the allergy problems are food related. For the hay fever my vet recmmended so chlortriemton and gave us genticin eyedrops to sooth the eyes. For the water allergries, we wash and dry completely, our dogs after they swim.

If you dog is chewing only his paws there is a good chance it is a contact allergy, something he standing in.

My flat-coat mix has allergies - we tried food-elimination tests, but the vet said inhalant allergies are much more common. She scratches her ears and bites her paws. I spoke to a dermatologist at the university here, and right now she is doing well with omega-3 fatty acid supplements and an OTC antihistamine. (Tavist - we tried benadryl and chlortrimeton but did not work for her.)If her symtoms worsen we'll have her tested.
Prednisone gives her instant relief, but I am avoiding it since she takes phenobarbital (she is epileptic and was having cluster siezures) and I worry about liver damage.

Bee pollen and hokamix 30 made by naturemix co are wonderful products for boosting immune system, and also yogurt, plain.
