Newfies and other pets

We would really love to get another pet but really don't have the room for another Newf at the moment. We live in a unit with a small yard. :( What other sort of pets do the rest of you have and how well do your Newfies get along with them?

Hi Nicole,

long time no hear! ;)

We're still intending to get out your way soon by the way.

Anyway, we only have a cat, who was once a lovely indoor cat but since we got Rory, chose to be an outdoor cat 99% of the time.

We try to bring him in but he is very hesitant.

They will nuzzle up to each other and Rory sniffs him attentively while he smooches around her, but sometimes she will bounce around and herd him up and he gets panicky and runs away.

We actually started off with two cats, but the other one was so scared of Rory she too insisted on staying outside - and it was awful, because she was the most gorgeous, affectionate cat - and she ventured on the road and got run over. :(

We will not get another cat, it's not fair on them. Rory will not hurt them but she can be rough with them. She has been known to dig her nose under the cat (incidentally called Taylor
) on the odd occasion when he's lying on the couch or the bed and try to lever him up.

We would like another dog but I really only want a Newfie and that's pretty much out of the question at the moment. I have recently thought a smaller companion would be nice though, for us and for Rory - something like a Hungarian Puli maybe. I don't think we will get another dog though.

We allways had just one dog in our familly, so Misha was the only pet for about a year. But this new year a stray kitten had chosen us hor her familly. She had no fear of dogs, she came right to Misha when she first saw her. They even grew up to be quite a buddies - it was funny to watch them play. After a while we got another small kitten - she kind of messed things up. The older cat was very unhappy with her being there, and she stopped playing with Misha too. She just want's to be outside as much as possible. Misha and a new cat are slowly becoming friends, but Misha is still to big for the little one and she gets easilly affraid of her.

Nevertheless, they can all be in the same room, without any problem at all and I love to have more than just one animal in the house. I would love to have another dog too, but I feel that would be unfair to Misha because I couldn't work and play with her as much as I do now, and I'm sure she'd missed it.

Sampson and I have a cat named FRADY. Frady was 5 years old when Sampson came. I think Sampson would like to be friends, but Frady just tolerates Sampson. Sometimes Sampson gets frisky and chases the cat, but he would not hurt Frady. Gosh, Sampson is such a sweetie, the cat could whip him with one paw tied behind his back.

My sister has a rabbit that I kept for one day and Sampson was really taken with it. He laid by its cage and watched it. He would not leave its cage even for a walk with me. This is a first because he sticks to me like glue. I took the rabbit out of the cage and Sam came over and nuzzeled (sp?) and licked it. When my sister came and took the rabbit, Sampson was visibly upset. He followed her and the rabbit to the car and chased her down the driveway  almost as if to say 'Please don't take my bunny'.

I would never leave him with the rabbit unattended. Afraid that he might get the rabbit and his squeekys confused.

Lisa-
Sampson sounds a lot like Morgan! She loooooves bunnies. My parents' neighbors have a small hobby farm with horses, goats, geese, pigeons, a rabbit, and whatever else happens to need rescueing or catches their fancy. My dogs all like to "sneak" over there because of the strange smells and creatures. Quark wanders around and investigates everything. Morgan stands in front of the rabbit hutch and STARES. She doesn't move until the rabbit goes inside its little house to get away from that big nose. Then Morgan stands under the hutch and bops it gently with her head in an unsuccessful attempt to get the bunny to come out of the house.

We have one landseer (male, 3.5 yo) and one male (nearly 2) Collie/Aussie Shep mix. They get along famously. I love the way Leo (Collie) keeps Solo (Newfie) company. Leo really motivates Solo to play, whereas with us, Solo only grumbles along ;)

Leo seems to have more pets though. He's adopted a fish in our tank to watch out for. Has a pet lizard (we call Leeezard) in the side yard. Plus the cat, KeoKeo (we call her Demon Kitty from Hell) He's trying desparately to make friends with the wild chipmunks in the yard.

Now you'd think it was Solo (Newfie) who'd be the Nanny one. But Solo conserves his energies. He nannies Leo and my neices

Honestly though, after having a couple Aussie Shep mixes with Solo - I'd stick with the Newfie / Aussie Shep combo. They are just so suited for each other. Others I've heard are Greyhounds, Collies (like mentioned above), Goldens and Labs.

I have 3 labs, ages 10, 6, and 4 and a 6 mo. old newf pup, Rory. They all get along very well. Rory and my 4 yr. old lab, Gaby, are best friends and play together often. This morning, Rory was sleeping in the kitchen and Gaby came over and gave her chew bone to Rory. Good friends take care of each other. I don't feel that having multiple dogs takes away from the attention each one gets, since they actually benefit from having each other. In addition, the labs enjoy all the chew toys and treats that I buy for Rory. They all get involved with her brushing, etc. I am in the backyard more with the house breaking, so everyone benefits and has fun.

In our house, we have 4 newfs, ages 6yrs, 10 mo., 6 mo. and 4 mo. We have 2 golden retrievers, both age 8 and 1 "nastycat". :D Nasty cat has been a thorn in my side for the last 14 years when he showed up on my doorstep as a ferrel kitten asking for food (we lived a few blocks from our present home, in the woods and there were many wild cats there.) I make the mistake of taking pity on him and fed him. About a week after his first visit, he didn't come for food, I thought he had found another sucker. Then 2 days later, he showed up, starving and SHOT!! I took him to the vet and after surgery, a week's stay and recovery, neutering, he became mine. Since then he takes every opportunity to bite or scratch that's given to him. I guess once wild, always wild? But, he's ours and we take care of the brat  .

Maggie is our first dog we've had in years. We have four cats who are deperatly trying to figure out if she is friend or foe. It,s really cute when she is sleeping on the floor, the cats will tiptoe up to her and see how hard she is sleeping and when convinced she is out, they run all around her and even have jumped over her. I think they will eventually be friends and someday I hope to get maggie a brother but not untill she grows up a little.
