Newf Mix In Bellevue, WA

Hi Guys, not sure if this is right to post here but I reviewed the sticky and decided that it falls in line.

I volunteer at the Seattle Humane Society and we have a super sweet Newf mix that came in the other day. They think he is mixed with border collie, but his face looks more like maybe there is some pit in there (not sure, totally not an expert in this).

Is this something we should alert the resuce folks to or not?

Thanks!

Also like I said he is a super sweet boy so I don't think he will have any trouble getting adopted.

Are you on Facebook? There is a group called Newfoundland Mix Rescue where mixes are posted also. Is he listed on the Humane Society's webpage yet? You could post the link here and on FB. I can do the FB if you're not on there.

Thanks for volunteering!

I agree and don't see Newf in this guy....

I don't know who determines what breeds are in a mix that comes into shelters, but I know they aren't always correct. Interesting that about 5 years ago I found a "Newf mix" online at the same shelter in Bellevue. I did meet her, she was adorable and brought her home. After observing her and going to obedience classes... we all figured that she was mostly Border collie... eventually someone suggested she may be part Akita. One thing about Sami, she is very aggressive with other dogs and doesn't have anything like a Newf personality. At one point I did have her DNA tested and found she is mostly Akita, and then smaller amount of Springer Spaniel and a few other things. I love Sami and it turned out well, but if I really wanted a dog that was part Newf (or a dog with the manner of a specific breed) I wouldn't take the word of a shelter description if it's not obvious. In my case I got a good dog for us, but not anything like a Newf. She is high maintenance due to her aggressiveness and would likely have been a disaster in some other homes. Moral of story be careful when assuming breeds in a mix and be careful about what a shelter thinks a dog is.

See her sitting below ... not a Newf, but cute that she has Irish spotted markings like my Newf Kona... lol.
