Newf likes being alone - normal or not?

Hey guys,

Training and socialization has been going great with my almost 5 month old puppy. We just went on a 6 hour car ride with her without issues or medications. She would wine only for going potty, an stayed calm for the trip. But one thing I am unsure of, and this only happens when we are home, is that she wants to go for naps outside. She will wine by the door as if to go potty, and then just lay in the shade next to the foundation of the house and sleep. It just doesn't seem like what I read about the breed! Any similar experience? Should I stop her from sleeping outside?

Also a question on recall. I have been training her a lot on recall. she is 99% reliable and the other 1% I will force her to come anyway. But this doesn't work when she is playing with another dog. I am dead to her when she is playing. She will not acknowledge me when I call her name. Any ideas how to make a treat more fun than playing with another dog??

Hang in there with the recall, she's still a baby.
As far as wanting to nap outside, in the shade, it probably feels cooler to her.
I'm no expert, but I'm sure the people with more experience will chime in.

I wouldn't worry about the alone time, Bessa did something similar when she was younger. Most of the time likes to be right next to us, but especially on weekends when we're around all the time, she takes some "alone time".

It might just be that it is cooler outside. You can put a fan on in the house to make her more comfortable and she may stay inside more.

My 3 yr old newfie is sleeping out on the deck as I type! She loves to nap outside, always has!

Though not Snuffles original owner, I was a neighbor. One night he disappeared and they were calling and looking. Turns out he was on the dark side of the house asleep next to the foundation.

Snuffles I think likes to lay out on the porch and watch the world go by, and will go to the door and wait or bark. Right now he is alone in the basement, since it is very cool in the basement from the AC running and he loves to lay on that cold concrete floor. When he gets lonely in a hour or 3, we will let out one bark to tell us he wants someone. Then I go down and bring him out (walk out door) and around. He use to do the steps, but quit coming up a few years ago and with the bad CCL, I do not let him him go down the steps anymore.

Thanks guys! It doesn't sound like it's a problem then. Even on a hot day, with the A/C running inside, she still naps outside. Maybe habit, or i just don't realize how cold the concrete foundation and dirt stays!

In 20+ years of newfs, I have only had one female. I can tell you that they are a lot more independent than the males. My Shannon is always outside, mostly by herself, just hanging out, patrolling the property, barking at critters, etc...My males prefer to be inside near the family.

ditto with Gracie. Have had 4 males and one and only Gracie. Much more independent and loves to nap alone.
