New Proceedure for Hip Dysplasia

I was watching the news last night and there was a story about a female Newfoundland named Lexi , I believe she may have been 7, who suffers from hip dysplasia. The story takes place in a vet hospital/clinic in Mississauga, Ontario and they were performing this new surgery to help improve the quality of life for dogs suffering from hip dysplasia. Apparently this surgery is very new in Canada but the US has been doing it for a couple years.

They remove fat cells that I thought they said includes stem cells from the dog's shoulder and "spin" it in a machine then inject it into the dog's hips. They said the whole proceedure takes 4 hours and costs about $1800.00. I got the impression that the Newf's mom was a vet tech at the clinic.

A copy of the newscast can be found at

The video is entitled "New Treatment".

I was surprised that the cost of $1800 (Cdn.) for the proceedure seemed reasonable in comparison to other types of treatment and surgeries.

Yeah, it does seem pretty reasonable, and the equipment sounds fairly inexpensive as well, so it has the potential to be in a lot of vet offices in the future. It is interesting. It will be neat to see how it does and how long the effects last in the dogs and horses they have treated.
