First of all thank you for the warm welcome!! this is a great board! I have a few questions and thought instead of posting in each individual forum, I would just ask them all here! Hope that's ok!!

-What kind of crate do you use and what size?
-Grooming...what do you actually cut? Do you all use a grooming table? I have been brushing Henry with him laying on the floor in my lap! Of course he is a puppy and the puppy fur in pretty easy to brush!
-How often do you bath your Newf?
-What kind of collar and leash do you use?
-What is the best way to teach "come?"

I think that's all for now, although be prepared for more questions!! I try to learn as much as I can! Henry is such a great dog!! We definitely made the right decision! I just wish my husband were here to enjoy him growing up!! And to help with those early morning wake ups!! Henry did sleep til 7 this morning! I figure he knew it was Saturday and that is his idea of sleeping in!!!

Thanks again!

Sallie and Henry

-What kind of crate do you use and what size?
I have 3 newfs and 14 crates, 8 are metal, 4 are soft sided or tent crates, and 2 are vari kennels. OK yes,
over the top! I have 3 metals in the house and 3 metals in the van. One vari kennel was used to ship Savannah to be me and the other someone gave me. 6 of the metals are 28" or 30" w x 36" h x 48" d. The soft sides are the same also that size. 2 metals are 24x36x48. I have variety of different brands - what ever was cheapest when I needed to buy. I do show and need extra crates for the show site and sometimes on a motel room.

Grooming...what do you actually cut?
At a minimum, you need to rim around and the bottom of each paw and the around he ears. IT's important that you get someone to show you. ANy other trimming you depends on you and what you are doing with your dog. I give my old dog Jake a puppy cut because he IS old and it hard for him to stand to be groomed and it is easier for all of us. My other 2 are groomed for the breed ring because I show them.

I do use a grooming table but then again, I grooming for show. Jake does not get put on the table and I do him on the floor.

How often do you bath your Newf?
When ever they need it :D , When I am campaiging a dog it can be every week otherwise its about every 4-8 weeks. In the summer, after they finish swimming for the day. And they get dried, even in the summer, otherwise they get mildewy adn skin problems.

What kind of collar and leash do you use?
My dogs all have break-away colloars with their tags on them. For training, I start with a slip collar, I prefer a chain, my trainer likes the cotton web. I also use a prong collar when needed.
I use a 6foot web leash for training but as I get ready for a obedeince show I will also use a 2 foot leather.

What is the best way to teach "come"?
I teach with a leash and treats and lots of praise. I recommend gettting into a basic obedeince class. There are some very good places on LI. Contact me privately, as to where you live and I can give you some names.

Welcome!!!

In answer to your questions:

What kind of crate do you use and what size?

I believe 100% in crates.

In the house, we use Midwest 28 X 36 X 48. Cora and Kira are crated, Sailor has free run of the house because he's too big. He's a good boy and doesn't get into trouble. ;) If he did, we'd set up an X pen.

In our Windstar (mini-van), we use 24 X 36 X 48 crates.

Grooming

We have our dogs professionally groomed. At home, we use slicker brushes, combs and undercoat rakes.

How often do you bath your Newf?

Whenever they need it

What kind of collar and leash do you use?

All dogs wear buckle collars. When out in public, they wear choke collars or prong collars depending on the dog.

What is the best way to teach "come?"

By taking your puppy to Puppy Kindergarten.

No crates here. D'Artagnan is a good boy (usually) and has lots of people keeping an eye on him. Bath about monthly or as needed, and buckle rolled collar and halti for walks.

I love the halti!

Considering you asked "what kind of crate and what size", then you are obviously a "crate" person. Good for you! I am with Annie and Joan on this, if only for the protection of you pup. They can chew up something dangerous in a matter of minutes.

I also use the 28 X 36 X 48 also. Midwest makes a good one and I think the collapsable one for portability is convenient also. Most of the pet stores have them. I got mine at Pet Stop on sale. The catalogs have them for good prices also.

crates are very helpful what if you had to leave your dog at the vet or groomer and they are never in one??? think of the stress to your dog.
