Hi All ! Luca is now old enough to get snipped, if you know what i mean. I hear some people say its ok not to nueter the dog while others say he should be for his health. We are really confused about this and only want the best for our Luca. So what do you all think yes or no .

thanks

Murphy is 6 months old now, and we are waiting till the Fall to get him Nutered, at the same time he is getting a tummy tack. I find no real reason to hurry up and snip him, and my Vet would perfer to wait till he's a year old..unless Murphy gets to testy with his male hormones racing, then he will go sooner

Zatara was neutered a couple of weeks ago, just before his first birthday. We had him neutered for a number of reasons.

For the last few months he had been showing increasing alpha behaviors (including an occasional growly challenge when I would try to get him to obey a command) -- the negative behaviors were exaggerated because of the presence of high male hormone levels. Zatara's trainer, who has 20+ years experience training police dogs and other dogs, even made the remark that Zatara has a high sex drive as compared to other dogs he has seen.

My understanding is that if you wait too long, some of the negative behaviors can become ingrained. I wanted to get Zatara neutered a few months ago, but it took me a while to convince my hubby that it was the right thing to do.

Another factor is that Zatara has a weak immune system -- not something we wanted to pass on to offspring. Our vet also thought it would be less taxing to Zatara's immune system to be exposed to the rigors of high hormone levels.

Another benefit is that a neutered dog is less likely to develop other medical problems later in life (I don't remember which ones, however).

Hope this helps in some way. Good luck in your decision.

Hi, we had Hawk done last August. He was approx 15 months old. If you are not planning on showing or breeding from your boys get them done. I have read so many horror stories
about dogs and the lenght they go to to get a girlfriend
. Hawks granddad howls when there is a bitch in season, not my idea of fun.

We have had two male Newfs and neutered both at around one year old for all the reasons mentioned, PLUS, we didn't want either to get lost or stolen and then become a possible breeding male for someone else. We are careful to prevent either scenario -- lost or stolen -- from happening but it can happen. It would kill me to think our current male might end up in the wrong hands, producing puppy mill puppies. He is the sweetest, best newf around, but he's no show or breeding dog with his kinky tail and orthopedic problems. Both came through the neutering with no problems whatsoever and it just wasn't a big deal. So I say neuter your guy unless he's a terrific representative of the breed standard and you're going to show him to his championship and then use him in a well planned breeding program. Otherwise, it is not worth all the other risks and hassles.

Heidi, you make an excellent point!!!

Sailor was neutered when he came to us. So we had little experience with un-neutered mails, unitl Bart arrived in January. He was very into "marking" and within days had lifted his leg on both sofa's in the livingroom. That was definitely not fun! We had him neutered, and noticed a significant change almost immediately.

well thanks for all the help..guess we will get him snipped since i dont plan on showing him. However for all of those with young newfs. I know by our breeder that newfs arent supposed to be nutered until after a year because of growth. they grow so fast in the first year that nuetering them before a year mess up thier hormones for growing.....However Luca doesnt show the alpha sign in the house , only with other dogs but then again he is bigger than all the dogs on the block.....thanks

Some of the health issues involved might be prostatitis. Also, possibility of cancer in later years. No point keeping him intact unless you are going to use him for stud.

As far as sooner than later, sooner would be better. I am speaking in terms of years not months. Dex was neutered when he was 4 yo. And he has shown some ingrained habits that I am not crazy about. But, he is a very sweet and gentle boy, thank doG. So, I can put up with some of his behaviors. And the neutering certainly did help to reduce some of those alpha tendencies.

HTH,

Sue
