Someone ??? has been having accidents in the house. I haven't been able to figure who it was until tonite. I had the bad pups crated and Devil and Molly loose downstairs when I went out. When I came back there was yet another wet spot on the carpet. So I had narrowed it down to either Devil or Molly. Later this evening, I found a puddle on my hardwood floor. It had happened only a moment before because I had walked there just a minute earlier and there was nothing. I looked and to my dismay, found blood in the urine. I wiped Devil and Molly and found it to be Molly. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow if I can get an appointment, but am hoping it's a UTI?? That's probably all it is, right?

Sarnewfie, tell me about cranberry pills? I have a faint memory of a discussion a long while ago about these pills helping with UTIs. Thanks

When we first got Panda peed everywhere. I took a urine sample to the vet and she had a UTI with blood in it. Antibiotics cleared it up--very strong and expensive (if I remember right). Since then she has had no accident in the house

Mollysmom, some newf owners use cranberry capsules to offset UTI
they give 1 capsule twice a day for 10 days, than they wait 3-5 months and do this again, some are 3 months some are 5 whatever is preferred they swear by it.
i have not had a uti for a very long time so i never use them, but....if i did i would.
back when morgan was young she had two UTI and i did the cranberry route for a year on and off the schedule up above and she is fine now, but....that is not saying that it is becouse of the cranberry stuff, but it does help as a preventative not a cure.
my guess as you know is the antibiotic will be needed of course, but after she is done wait about a month or two than start her on the cranberry.

Rory had a UTI when she was little and the urine test showed blood in the urine.

Like Jeannie, meds solved the problem.

Hope Molly girl is ok.

Hi, Molly saw the vet this morning after I "collected" a sample which is quite difficult if your girl likes her privacy :D . Ewwwww, blood and puss  . This has been going on for three weeks and I never realized what it was. All the girls are housebroken, but I thought maybe one of the BAD puppies was going into her first heat and was being "dirty". Anyway, she's on 2 rimadyl to get her some quick relief, just one a day for 2 days and cefilexin sp. for 3 weeks. It hasn't gotten to the kidneys yet which is good.

BUT - her keytones are high. Her glucose is normal- no diabetes, but the keytones are high which would mean she's over carbohydrating, right? Vet was a little perplexed by this result but not too concerned. Anyone know of this situation happening and what it could mean? Thanks

the only help I can offer with the keytones being high is my own experience with yo-yo dieting. one of the goals of the atkins diet is to strive to be in "keytosis". keytosis is obtained by eliminating carbohydrates from your diet. In this way, your body starts burning your own fat. the more keytones, the more the diet is working. The less carbs the better to produce keytones. I don't know how this applies to dogs. - colleen

My late Annie, newfie, had a UTI. And, I thought she was just becoming incontinent. At that time she was 12 yo. Come to find out she did have a UTI. Also, her urine had an extremely pungent smell.

We got the antibiotics and that did the trick. The problem with her also was that she was such a finicky eater, and I think the pills reduced her appetite. So we had to pill her and find anything that she would eat. Of course at that age she pretty much could have anything she wanted. She was never overweight either.

I use unsweetened organic cranberry juice as the liquid in my veggie pulp for the dog. Add in a little raw honey, and Flower is in doggie heaven, and she doesn't have to take a pill. She gets this a few times a week. Her messing in the house cleared up on her new diet. I'm sure this has something to do with it. She had UTI when we got her, but the drugs cleared it up. SHe never tested positive again, and I thought it was a habit issue. Maybe not.
