Matts behind the ears

I noticed that Ella is getting knots and matted fur behind her ears. I tried combing it out and had to pull hard to get them out. The knots get inbetween the back of the ear and her neck. I tried to take a pic but where I combed it, but now the other side is matting. She tolerated the hard combing with a wagging tail, but I felt terrible. Is there an easier way? I don't want to cut the fur. I would rather save the soft fluffy ears.

Sometimes when the matting is behind the ears you have no choice but to shave it out. You can avoid those mats by combing behind the ears often.

Clara Bell gets mats there as well. I gave up trying to keep the area combed, and now just keep the hair short behind her ears. When you look at her, you can't tell the hair is short. I just want her to be comfortable!

Yup, just trim or shave it out. As the hair grows out, comb it daily or every other day. We also keep that hair trimmed as it allows for more air circulation and less maintenance. You can't tell at all.

Funny you mention the nylon collars. I have been using a nylon no-slip lead because we have great success with them at the rescue I work at. The matts are exactly where the collar touches her neck, which is below her ears. I am going to switch the collar tomorrow. I did find out that wetting the Matt and putting Chris Christensen conditioner on the matts made it easier to comb them out. Thanks Lynn, I would of never made that connection.
