Mattresses

This is so not dog related, but everyone here sleeps, so thought I'd pose a question to you all. My husband has lower back problems and sleeps on the couch most of the time because our mattress is just too firm for his back. Does anyone here with lower back pain have mattress recommendations? I have read about Tempur-pedic mattresses, but wonder if anyone here has one and what they think.

I have bad lower back pain at times but I had always heard that firmer was better for a bad back as it keeps your spine aligned.

We tried several mattresses and finally found the best one at Jordan's furniture. It is a foam mattress made by Nature Rest that is both soft and has great support. My husband also has a bad lower back and since we got this he has not complained once in the 10 months sine we got it.

I would steer clear of the memory foam beds as we found out that they tend to lose there ability to spring back after a short time.

Hope that helps!! :)

I have some back pain from a serious car accident and use a foam mattress with a 2 inch memory foam topper. If you get a good quality memory foam topper it will maintain its elastic properties, and the firm mattress is a good supportive base for it.

Since my early 30s..I have learned to appreciate a REALLY firm mattress..and can actually sleep in a bedroll..at someone house, in emerg...on their carpeted floor. Soft beds..I just ignore. ina n HB

DH does the same thing.. I love my firm mattress, but he hates it with a passion. So at the moment, Mudji is my only company.

DH was at a trade show staying in a hotel that had the Sleep Number beds. He loved it...

Just another thought..

I was in a horrific accident in 1999. (wound up under a semi). My lower back is trashed. Since then I have slept with two plywood boards on the bed. One between the box and mattress, the other under the mattress topper.
If I am in a hotel, many times I have to take the bedspread off and sleep on it on the floor because I am in agony after a couple of hours.

Sleep Number bed all the way! I've had a bad back since I hurt it in the mine. We bought a Sleep Number bed about a year or so ago, and I can actually get right out of bed in the morning without any pain.

Ahhh Tempur.. the best thing to come out of Sweden since Volvo. We have one and i have to say it is the best mattress i have ever had. They are expensive but well worth it. We have had ours about 5 years now. Amazing what a good mattress can do. I highly recommend Tempur.

P.S. NASA Uses Tempur.. actually it was invented for the space program.

I have a Tempurpedic Celebrity and it was worth every penny. I would actually do a commercial on how wonderful the mattress is. My mother was just experiencing back problems and she purchased one and hasn't had a bad nights sleep yet.
P.S. To Nasus...I also drive a Volvo XC, yeah Sweden!

My husband and I both have terrible lower back pain and would
always wake up suffering even after buying a new "comfortable"
mattress. The solution I found was buying a 3" memory foam
mattress topper from overstock.com. We've had it for three
years and are as happy with it now as when we first bought
it. Every night when I get into bed I still think this is the most
comfortable bed I've ever slept on.

I have severe arthritis in my spine which caused a nerve deformity. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what I sleep on....some nights are good and some are bad. I do not recommend the memory foam mattress though. Especially if you tend to move around a lot while sleeping.

I recently got a new mattress and went with a natural latex mattress.

They are a bit pricey, but so worth it. No springs to poke or wear out. It lasts a lot longer then memory foam and similar products. If you go with a natural latex, you don't get all the chemicals that come from synthetic products which is good for people that like to go as natural as possible or have chemical sensitivities.

Thanks for your responses. It is interesting that some people with back issues need a firm mattress (or even plywood...yikes!) while others need a more conforming, softer mattress. I guess with my husband, he feels the firm mattress does not support his lower back region. Whenever he does fall asleep in the bed, he wakes up with a very stiff, achy back. Our mattress is not that old, so hate to buy a brand new one...but the idea of getting a memory foam topper might be a good (cheaper) solution to try until we are ready for a new mattress.

Thanks all!

I have back problems too and have one of the firm back support mattresses. Had it awhile and can't remember the brand offhand. I hate soft mattresses. I usually can't hardly move after sleeping on them.

I managed the data on very large sleep study over a two year time period. One of the goals of the study was to determine the quality of sleep for different body types on different mattress surfaces ranging from very soft to very hard. The study was limited to only good sleepers. We collected data on over 12,000 nights of sleep. The conclusions are still up in the air and the data is still being analyzed, but so far it looks to me like everybody sleeps differently and that the choice of mattress firmness is a personal preference much like sexual preference. This is not the results that were initially expected and they are still working hard to find correlations.
