Mary's Manners

It came home to me once again this morning just how well our Mary has learned basic courtesy despite her handicaps.

Halfway through breakfast, I took a bit of a risk and stepped into the kitchen to refill my coffee, leaving a plateful of pastry unguarded in the dining room. I returned to find Mary sitting stock-still, bare inches from the table, nose twitching eagerly. She could have gobbled all my croissants in a matter of milliseconds, and obviously wanted to, but she knew she shouldn't.

Thrilled and so pleased with the little girl, I gave her an extra biscuit as reward once I finished my breakfast, then proceeded with my age-old morning routine.

Mary, however, clearly felt that she deserved additional recognition. But did she make a fuss? No; rather just a little later, while I was otherwise occupied, she scratched politely-- just once-- on the bathroom door.

Ah, dear Mary.... what can a proud papa say at a moment like that?

"Hang on, sweetie-- I'll be out in a minute!"

You're an excellent storyteller :) I remember stumbling upon your website well before I brought my girl home...I dont know who is more fortunate to have "found" the other; you or Mary.

Bob, you really must get all of your stories down on paper. Mary has endeared herself to all of us and you tell about all of your pups so brilliantly. I eagerly look forward to your posts.

Thanks so much, everyone. Mary is definitely a sweetheart, and I'll totally plead guilty to the "wrapped around her paw" charge.

I also love hearing about Mary. It's nice to know she has unconditional love and it's amazing how that love can heal so many things.
