Majors

Newfs Forever

New member
Dear Listers,

Would someone be so kind and describe 3 point majors, 5 point majors. I am given to
understand that the amount of points depends on the amount of dogs competing, correct?

Also, are these points only applicable in confirmation? Or are they applicable in draft, water work, tracking, etc?

TIA,

Sue

They are only for conformation as in working events are based on the dogs personal preformance.

The AKC sets points based on the number of dogs and bitches (seperate) of each breed are shown in an average show in the region. The points breakdown is printed in the show cataloge at the end of the open classes for dogs and bitches. The numbers are changed yearly. I don't know when. As of Dec 15th in OH the points for newfs were:
Dogs: 2=1, 5=2, 7=3, 8=4, 12=5.
Bitches: 2=1, 5=2, 8=3, 11=4, 16=5

Where the first number is the number of dogs/bitches beaten (not entered, but actually shown that day). So in OH, to get a major on a dog, 7 have to be there, and on a bitch 8 have to be there.

It's usually harder to finish a bitch because more are shown/used for breeding and because the boys tend to be more "typey".

Points get confusing the higher you go. If for example there were 2 males and 8 females, and the winners dog beats the winners bitch to get best of winners, instead of 1 point, he would get 3 (a major).

It gets more confusing from there, so if someone want to pick this up with what happens when an open dog goes over specials or takes a group 1....feel free.

HTH,
Laura
