lyme vaccination and bad reactions

My Bailey who is barely 5 months old had her lyme shot last friday and then last night she began to limp on the left hind leg where she got the shot.

Has anyone ever experienced this kind of reaction before? Or do you think that it is more likely that she just happened to twist that knee yesterday?

She had never cryed out in pain like she hurt herself or if you feel and press on the leg.

She has not been very interested in food but will eat wet food off of a fork straight from the can.

We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow.

Poor Bailey. I am sorry to hear he might be experiencing a bad reaction to the vaccine. The lyme disease vaccine is controversial because there are side effects and reactions to it. I don't give it to my dogs but others here do and hopefully they will be more help here. Good idea that you are taking him back to the vet tomorrow to make sure everything is ok. I would not give this vaccination to him again if he had a bad reaction now. I hope Bailey is feeling better soon.

Just curious, is the Lyme vaccination a regional thing. I dont think any of my dogs have ever had one?? We are here in Seattle.

Hope all goes well tomorrow.

That definitely sounds like a reaction to the Lyme vaccine, and you're doing the right thing by getting him into the vet asap. I would get on the Internet and do all the research you possibly can on reactions to the vaccine, because, depending on your vet, they may blow off the thought that this is a reaction to the vaccine and it's up to you to make sure you get what you need from them.

Two web sites I came up with very quickly are:
http://www.caberfeidh.com/Lyme.htm
http://www.ebvet.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=275&sid=2f2231d4bc5398ec5142015e8fbc2de5

kam237 ... the Lyme vaccine is a regional recommendation depending on the incidence of Lyme's in your area. Here's a map of the U.S. showing Lyme's incidence.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/lyme/riskmap.htm

We are in a high Lyme's area but do not do the vaccine.

I'm glad to hear you are getting to the Vet ASAP!! It is more common than we are told regarding reactions to the vaccines. Neurological problems are HUGE!!!

She already seems to be feeling better....But we are still going to rule out an injury since she is only favoring that one leg. I'm really guessing it is that her muscle is sore from the injection itself.

I will NOT be vaccinating for lyme in any of the 3 dogs from now on since it seems as though the chances of getting a reaction seem more likely to happen than getting the lyme itself.

Hi

The vet said that in part it was the shot going into her muscle but he also says she has pano. So with both at the same time it made it worse.

I will think long and hard before I give any of my dogs the Lyme vaccination again. As is seems the side effects are worse than the off chance they get the disease.

I'm sorry your puppy has pano. Make sure you do a search on here for it and you'll find lots of good advice about it.

I, too, have opted against giving the Lyme's vaccine, but I do test mine for Lyme's and other tick diseases (there is now an in-office test that includes heartworm and the 3 tick-borne diseases) at least once a year, if not twice. Lyme's is not good, but if you catch it early, it's quite treatable.

Thanks!
I have been reading as much of it as I can believe me!

She is much better today and has even been starting all her usual trouble like the jump on poor Vanessa game :devil2: (who she has grown to be the same size if not a bit bigger!) and stealing peoples slippers. It is hard to keep her quiet I tell you!!

I hoping that we can control it from here on out and not panic next time she limps a little!
