Listerine - good or bad?

I've only been showing my Newfs for a couple of years so I'm still on the uphill climb of the learning curve when it comes to show grooming, but one of the first tricks I was taught by other Newf handlers was to use a Listerine/water mist when grooming to volumize and add luster to the coat.

However, at a recent show a friend who worked for years as a professional groomer and has owned and shown Tervs and Schipps, and has also handled and groomed Newfs, and whose opinion I respect, was giving me some differing grooming advice. She said to NEVER use Listerine because the alcohol dried out the skin and coat and caused breakage.

I know that Original Listerine contains essential oils (eucalyptol, menthol, thymol, etc) in an alcohol (ethanol) carrier.

I see from searching threads here that Listerine is a popular grooming aid among many. Do any of you share this negative opinion? Has anyone tried the alcohol-free Listerine?

Thanks,
Gordon

PS: After following her grooming advice my girl won Breed after being defeated the day before!

I've used it rarely, just to sanitize the hair...as a mist.

I've also used vinegar and water. I prefer the ACV and water, because it's great for the coat, and the skin, and will make them poof (in a mist) just like Listerine does.

I use Miracle Groom. I've used Listerene mainly to mist girls in season. It also kills fleas on contact. I learned that when I groomed for a living.
Congrats on her win too.

Years ago when I worked for Windwagon Newfoundlands we would mist the coat with a mixture of listerine and water because there were no other options. A couple years ago I talked to Penny Shubert about the changes. She recommends misting with a mixture of Plush Puppy volumising cream. Mix about a tablespoon to a quart of warm water.
