I haven't posted on this board for a very long time and have searched through past messages re: flooring and Newf toenails. We have Bruce hardwood floors that look absolutely AWFUL. They are so scratched up. We are thinking of having the floors replaced/refinished. From what I've read thus far on this board about wood floors and toenails, it's basically a no-win situation. We recently saw in a pet catalog, what looked like rubber nails that can be glued on a dog's toenail. Kind of like fake fingernails. Has anyone ever used this and is it effective? I know that clipping the dog's nails is one of the key factors in saving floors, but was wondering if these things would help as well.

I know what you are talking about.. the nails fit over the dogs nail they come in sizes also.. I tried them in a vain attempt to save my floors.. they worked well until we went out for a walk.. the wore down the very day we put them on. The only real way to save the floors is to keep the nails short. U might have to start cutting weekly, when the nails are long the quick grows down so cutting short the first time will cut the quick.. u have to start cutting over a series of months for the quick to go up till u can get the nails short enough.. we are still working on it LOL

Keep the nails short and use a dremel to smooth them out. If your nail cutter is an inexpensive type or not sharp anymore it might be giving the nails a jagged edge.

Yes, a dremel is a fine tool for nails......Hannah and Sophie were always scratching me, even though I keep their nails short.
With the dremel I can keep them short AND smooth. No more racing stripes from love hugs!

Funny you should mention fake nails. Today at my vets I saw a broshure on glue on cat nail covers to prevent de clawing. They were to cool. And cheap..came in colors.. They just fit over the claw so they could not scratch...Julie

I think that's the same thing Yogurt was talking about...they come in all sizes--for cats and dogs--Soft paws, soft claws, soft caps??

Anyone needs these I can get them far cheaper thru the shop if I remember correctly they are about 6.00 per set for all 4 paws and the glue is 2.00 I am not going to make anymoney on these so I will not stock them but if you need some just pm me and i should be able to drop ship them to you or just get them in and send them to you. They work well once the dog or cat gets used to them. The first and sometimes the second time they seem to want to chew them off. after that they just leave them. I have to find my order book fromt he company that makes them and I can tell you exact prices then. They are not as expensive as that place is selling them for!

Softpaws are a great product! Wrigley's have been on for 2 weeks and show no sign of coming off. His nails, in the meantime are growing back and protected from infection. He never once tried to bite them off. They don't affect his gait, they don't cut into any part of his skin or anything. I put them on and he never looked twice at them. I only have them on the two middle claws on both front paws. They are one product that really lives up to and beyond their claims.

The best fix for long nails is a 30-minute walk on concrete once a day...keep it slow and avoid the heat, but it does a wonderful job of keeping nails "dremeled" down, if you will!
