(UPDATE ON POST #23 ... page 3)

(its gonna be a book ... sorry guys ... lol)

Hi Everyone ....

Steve, Joanna, and Kaylee here ... We have now had her for a very very very blessed week, to say the least. We LOVE her, but she does have some weird antics that we are trying to break.

First and foremost, since day 2/3, she has been doing GREAT in her crate! She would cry for 5-10 minutes, then give up, and go to sleep. Then she would wake up and just sit in her crate and wait for us to come get her.

When we first got her, she had been on a flight (waiting area plus cargo hold) for almost 11 hours straight  When we got her, she was completely soiled in her own urine and had poo'd in the corner of her crate. We immediately gave her a bath and got her all nice and spiffy. completely flushed/rinsed her crate and actually started using another one that was newer so their was no "pee smell" or "residue"

Now, its because of this long trip, I feel she now thinks its "OK" to pee in her crate and even lay in it. We have tried with and without using a towel as bedding and everytime we put her in (even for 30min) she soils it :darn:

She will not poo, only pee. Its gotten to the point, where she won't even wake us up in the middle of the night or during the day to go. She just quietly urinates and and lays back down.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks Guys and Gals ...

Have you made her area in the crate very small so she can only stand up, turn around and lay down?

I would recommend setting an alarm clock and taking her out at regular intervals. Perhaps starring with once an hour due to her "kumkuat" sized bladder. After a few nights you could probably guage how often she really needs to go. My guess is that since she was stuck in that airplane kennel for 11 hours she decided that she couldn't rely on anyone to take care of her potty needs. So she is just taking care of it the only way she knows how. I think you need to help her regain trust that she is going to be taken care of now. Once she learns to potty on a schedule she will learn how nice it is to have a clean crate. Eventually she will start to tell you when she needs to go because she doesn't want to soil her bed. It may take her a while to get there so be patient while she unlearns bad habits.

Puppies at this age may need to go out as often as 20 min. So if she is going in her crate after 30 min that should tell you that she's not getting out often enough.

Charity has a great idea with the alarm. At night she may be able to go a bit longer but for these first few weeks, help her by taking her out more often.

Do make sure the crate is small too.

Have you visited the kennel she came from? Are you sure she's not from a puppy mill or bad breeder? There is a chance she has been living in a confined area and learned those bad habits before she came to you. Also, as someone else mentioned, she looks really small to me for her age, it could indicate some other problems (kidneys?) or maybe she's not as old as you were told she is.

Her crate is very small. When she stands up, her head is about 1" from the top of the crate, she can turn around and lay down without a problem. we squeeze her in with a single chewing toy and that's it. (We have a "Giant Size" Precision Kennel with Divider once she outgrows this crate.)

the problem we seem to be having is, even if we leave her in the crate for 15 minutes, she still pees. We have been on a schedule every night but doesn't like to abide by it, its strange. We take her out on the hour every hour to go potty and she seems to be ok with that during the day, but may have an accident around the 45 minute mark, it which case, we rush her outside.

Staying clean? Kaylee doesn't know how. Sprinklers come on and puddles appear and she's all in and around it. Her favorite thing is to roll in dirt and leaves, then lay in the wet grass and wait for mommy and/or daddy to pick her up and clean her off before she goes back in the house.

thanks for the suggestions charityd ... will try and move up her nightly potty breaks and see if that helps!

do you suggest a crate/kennel with or without a towel/bedding?

Hi Cherilyn,

Thanks for your concern ... here is what i mentioned in her picture thread about her breeder ...

{Kaylee is} ... 100% purebred akc registered saint .... her mother is only about 100 lbs (sire is about 170lbs.) so we think she is gonna stay about the size of her mom. The breeder we got her from wasn't the best, and I wish we had done better research :banghead: The breeder was no puppy mill or anything to that extent, and they only had about 1 litter a year, there were just several "iffy" things about them, that looking back now, i would have second guessed. butttttt, we have her now, and that's all that matters.
Like i said ... I wish I had done better research. Her sleeping quarters at the breeders seemed fine. I really just feel like the breeders weren't "knowledgeable" enough. They were very nice, but did seem unexperienced.

Our wonderful vet did a very, very thorough inspection and said she looked underweight but her bone structure/joints seemed good. Stool samples came back good, and we have really had no issues with her. She is amazing with people, other dogs, even kids.

I'm no expert but it seems your wee baby is just going through an adjustment period. You have only had her a week. I know it can be stressful. I think I invented the word ..LOL
I'm betting once she settles and gets older she will be just fine.
She is truly adorable..

We had a similar problem with Panda-she would "leak" after having just gone out. The solution was that she'd been taking too much water in-and her bladder was always full. Could it be your girl's drinking too much water? Or it's possible she has a UTI?

I doubt in this short of time she thinks it's OK to go in the crate-but again (as Cherilyn suggests) we can't speak for what things were like before you adopted her.

stressful ... a couple night ago she accidently play bit Joanna a little too hard and it made her cry ... i felt sooo bad. Puppy hood can be a very trying, stressful, and patient learning time. Thanks for your wonderful comments :hugs:

The last couple days we have been limiting her water intake. She does love her water, and drinks as much as she can as fast as she can, normally resulting in a burp or hiccups. so, we limit it and put it down for 10-15 seconds at a time for a drink, then pick it back up.

When we first got her, she couldn't hold it for 15 minutes, now we are up to about an hour (unless she is in her crate) When i spoke with our vet, he pretty much ruled out a UTI just by the symptoms, however, I might still try and get a urine sample and send it in. Better to be safe rather then sorry.

How old is she? Of course everytime she eats, drinks, plays a little, or wakes from a nap, you should just count on her needing to go.......you've got to be ready for that and take her out on the leash to do it. It is EXHAUSTING--to say the least. Ha!

She probably doesn't have a UTI, but our little (well not little now) girl couldn't "hold it" for very long--then one day we noticed some blood--she apparently had a severe UTI. We felt awful, because what we chalked up to "puppyhood" was really a UTI. Once she was on antibiotics, the frequency she needed to go changed tremendously. Just something to keep in mind.

regarding your above question on bedding. I definitely wouldn't have any in the kennel. It will be cooler without it. More importantly, any bedding you put in there is just going to get urine on it and hold the smell which will only encourage her to go more in the crate. Do you have some of that enzymatic cleaner to get the urine smell completely out of the crate?

awwww....

We keep an eye on Kaylee at all waking hours. as soon as she eats, plays, wakes, we take her out immediately! it can be exhausting, but we are looking at the final outcome and that is encouragement in and of itself.

we really took a look at her urine. inspected it, smelled it , and looked and her yoo-hoo, and everything looked perfectly fine. her pee even smells like water, there is not even a tinge of urine smell (another very strange fact about her) We have already started her on Cranberry tabs to help balance PH levels just in case she did have a slight uti or irritation. besides cranberry, she is also on glucosamine and ester c which i hear can also make trips to go pee frequent.

thanks for your very kind insight :)

Without. Dogs seem to like to pee on porous surfaces.
Good to know! I have felt bad about her laying on hard surfaces and kept bedding in so she would feel more comfortable. Bedding is coming out ASAP!

Thanks

excellent thought on being much cooler as well. we do clean it often and there is new bedding in everytime she goes in (not anymore however, no bedding for her)

What is a good enzymatic cleaner to get? i don't believe i have researched this....

Thanks for everything guys .... every day is another day researching and learning! :book:

If when you got her she couldn't hold it for 15 minutes I'd say she's got a UTI or something going on down there. Bella at 10.5 weeks when we got her her could hold it for hours and Murphy held it for 8 hours on his plane journey from NJ to CA and he was only 7.5 weeks. She is from a breeder right??? Puppies from pet stores typically do not crate train well as they have used their crate as a bathroom their whole lives. Also how large is the crate?? If you have a huge crate and no divider than she has plenty of space to pee and then get away from it. Put in a divider so she only has a small amount of space...this greatly deters soiling the crate and you can move the divider as she grows.

Much of the research i have done says most 8-10 week old pups can hold it (while awake) for anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour before being let out. Just in the past week, she has gone from 10-15 minutes all the way up to where she is now (45-60 minutes) I really feel it is just an adjustment period right now for her.

She is direct from the breader. Crate is small. In the next few weeks, we will move her to the larger crate with a divider.

I can't remember the brand of our enzymatic cleaner, but you should be able to get one at your local pet store. Regular cleaners will not fully remove the smell. They might be good enough for our noses, but not for a dog's nose :)
