Jumping!

My Newf, Ullr is eight months old and a solid 115 lbs. He's generally really well behaved. However, when he gets excited (like when I come home from work), he jumps on me. Not in front of me, on me! I know he just wants to play, but he finally knocked me on my butt last night. So far, he fortunately doesn't exhibit this behavior on anyone but me, but it needs to stop before I get hurt.
My former Newf didn't have this issue, so I'm at a loss as to the best way to stop it. Turning my back and ignoring him only gets me clipped from behind. I've tried no attention whatsoever until he sits, and then giving him calm, soothing attention. No luck. As soon as I stop, he jumps on me.
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!:grrr:

Two suggestions:

1. Have a treat WITH you before you come through the door. If/When the jumping starts, use the treat to get his attention to go into a 'sit'.

OR

2. If/When the jumping starts when you come through the door, correct him with something like, "Uh-oh....Sorry!" and turn right around and walk back outside. He'll start to get that jumping means you're going to leave. When you come through the door....and it may take quite a few tries at first, and he doesn't jump on you, then give him a reward.

I also find with some of the more excitable youngsters that the "no touch", "no talk" "no eye contact" process works better. You're "coming home" should be treated like a non-event....nothing that he should get excited about.

This. I still have to tell people (and my girl is 2 years, 8 months) when they first come over to completely ignore her and be as booooooring as possible until she settles down. Totally worked for us!

Charlieinnj has it right. I used all of her advice when Gracie was behaving as your Newf is doing. Gracie also used to leap at me from behind and knocked me flat. A combination of making homecoming a Non-event and having a treat with me to get her into a sit worked wonders. Fair warning...it did take several days for it to click with her.
