With all the talk about what is the best way to feed our furkids, I started to look at ingredients in ALL foods. Pet and human. I am trying to do the best I can by my fur kids and my family. So today I came home from the grocery stores (yes, storeS - I went to two places) and I was proud to show my husband what I got for the family.

Now, he hasn't been doing all the research and he kept asking me questions....in the realm of "Why?". I was able to answer why I bought free range meats, why the chicken was fed an only veggie diet and were never injected with antibiotics, why I tried to buy beef without the steriod injections. But I couldn't answer why I bought the organic fruit and veggies. There are so many conflicting studies on this, I was wondering if someone can tell me why organic is better. (or why it isn't).

BTW - This does involve my furkids, as they eat alot of what we eat! (yes they are counter surfers)

I ran into the same thing. My answer was..."Because that is what I was raised on and our way of life and I want to preserve this."

But you're right there is so much more to it.

I miss organic food. Up here in our little tiny town, we usually don't receive much in the way of organic. But every summer we have a van come up from Washington full of organic foods. So we buy then, and freeze!!

Here's some links I found pro-organic that may be of help...Also, try the agricultural center in your area. They often have some excellent pamplets.

There is some evidence that the bioavailability of the nutrients is better but the reason we try to do organic is mostly to help keep chemicals out of the environment. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are contaminents. And every little bit helps.

We eat almost all organic in our house. We started out with milk to get away from bovine growth hormones and before we knew it we were eating almost 100 percent organic. All of the hormones, antibiotics and pesticides in food can not be good for us. The research I did made me switch in a heartbeat. I joined an organic co-op where I could get everything I wanted in one shot and co-ops make eating organic so much more afordable.

Yep,

I agree. Who needs to eat veggies and fruits that have chemicals and/or pesticides.

Unfortunately, up here it is not too easy to get organic. However, we are getting better. There is a little more variety. Thanks doG!

I haven't read the above articles, but I just read one in my magazine that states that organic fruits and veggies have more of the helpful nutrients than traditionally raised produce - by about 65%. I always try to buy organic when possible. We're lucky to have a Whole Foods close by and I find that - by and large - their prices are very reasonable.
