Is this a Newf?

We were at a local "historical park" today with my Uncle who was visiting from Arizona. He was born and raised in Dayton, and this park is about the regions history.

Anyway, we were in this Cabin called "Newcom Tavern" which was built in 1796. The picture is of one of the descendants and was taken in the 1840's.

I think it's a Newf... they seem to follow me everywhere. What do you guys think?

What a great picture! It seems like most pictures taken in that era are so stuffy -- this one is quite different and so charming. The dog does resemble a newf but I think it's too small to be a newf (unless they used to be smaller back then) -- maybe it's part newf. The dog looks like it's an adult but its head is not much different in size than the girl's. My newfs are not all that large, yet their heads are larger than mine.

Looks a lot like a Newf to me.

I love the expression on the dog's face. It looks so happy.

Maybe it's a bitch? Their heads aren't nearly as large.

I'm casting my vote for, "It's a Newfie."

Newfoundland dogs were quite popular in the Victorian era, and we have a whole bunch of "Girl With Big Black Dog" images in our Newf-o-bilia collection: Currier & Ives type prints, that sort of thing. The Newfies of the day did not always look like today's breed standard, so this could quite easily be one.

Definitely a Newf. Hard to see the head shape but the old Newfs often had curly hair like that.

Very neat picture, doesn't that young girl look lovely?
