Is It Okay To Ask?

Reading Peter Maniate's website he talks about trying to add to the current average lifespan of Newfs. I wonder how other breeders would feel if I asked the average lifespan of their breeding lines. Would it in some way be insulting or off putting? I don't mean that I expect breeders here to actually answer the question, unless you'd like to. Just wondered if it's okay to ask when looking for a puppy in the future.

So right after I posted this I read R Tafts reply to Cassandra and compared to all that, well, my question seems like nothing. R Taft if you read this, how long does it take to meet so many Newfy relatives and how fun was it?

I decided three years ago that I would like another puppy and started my Quest......:) I also joined the newfoundland Club of Australia to keep up to date with all that they do etc.
I had three previous puppie from the same breeder and we were on very friendly terms. And She was/is also the main rescue person in our state. So I also had a couple of rescues through her. I got Katy so late, because whilst we were waiting for a litter, Annabelle came into Rescue.......Dog and People aggressive and did not do well in her forster home. So she asked me would I take her. Which we did, long story, but she is great now. But that put the puppy on hold. because we will only have a pup if the adult dogs are totally reliable. So that gave me more time to meet more people and their dogs. I travelled long ways to meet these dogs and the newfie world here thinks I am quite mad, to travel so far. But we have no local newfs. Newfie days and show are just great to meet. Shows are a bit busy to talk to owners. But you are lucky, because you have work days such as draft/cart and water work too. Which we do not have. I still think the casual newfie days are just the best.
And fun........We had a terrific day at the last one. And I am going on another newfie day at a beach 6 hours away from us. Well as I said to hubby "only a 12 hour round trip". We all have a lot of fun and no I am not planning on a new puppy (yet :))........Ronnie

My final choice was a combination of the breeder's first choice, my heart dogs niece having the pups and a great Volhard score. Katie retrieved at five weeks :), was very outgoing, but not the top dog or bossy..........And what sealed the deal was I met Katy's full sister at eight month, Annie and besides looking gorgeous and doing well in the show ring, she was so sweet.
So I am longwinded person when it comes to looking for a pup and probably drive breeders around the bend, though i get on quite well with a few Australian ones

In other words, Ronnie, you got Katy "on a whim"? LOL! Sounds like you had as much fun researching as actually having a puppy.

I think it's an important question. The Finnish Newf Clubs health committee is actually doing that right now. We are collecting names and death informations about both old and very young dogs that have passed away. I did a short review of the results last year and they were very interesting indeed! So we're continuing and hoping to make a larger review soon. It will basically look at vigour in different lineages, and how likely are some lines more likely to live over 10 than others.

When we were getting selected by Angus, I asked our breeder that very question. She did not seem put off at all and gave me a fair answer.

I also think it's an important question. And it's something I like looking at too when I'm researching.

Yes I wish newf's would live as long as horses. One of my favorite horses lived healthy until 36 and was ridden until 34
Agreed!! And if I ever am lucky enough to get a horse, I'd love to be able to contact you for your knowledge and tips!!!
