Is he pure or mixed?

This is Loki when he was around 4 months old and 63 pounds I have had people tell me he is a mix but my vet's assistant says he is pure. I'm posting this to get your opinions.

I lean towards a mix because the sharpness of the nose. Also at that age I would expect the paws to look a bigger in proportion to the body.

I say he is a mix. But who cares. He looks like a sweetie no matter what.

I cannot tell by the photo but on his back leg is that a double dew claw or hair. A double dew claw means he is mixed with a Great Pyrenees

I'm not an expert, but I would say a mix as well. His nose is pointy. Maybe w/ a Border Collie? Still cute either way! Enjoy!

Fiona has a pointier snout and thin body type. I'm amazed at how many people see her as a purebred (which I believe her to be but questioned it myself). She has the classic body type that you see in older pics and prints. Like others have said...really doesn't matter. He's got a kissable head!

He appears to be a mix but then my boy Jake looked like the Grinch when we got him at around 6 to 7 months of age. He was the funniest looking newf ever...but now as he just turned 5 he is just beautiful...but, it really doesn't matter unless you PAID for a purebreed, he is just beautiful the way he is...a pretty boy!

He was given to us. Yes he has the double dew claws on his back paws. I was told that there is a lady about 14 miles from where we live that breeds Newfs and hers also have the double rear dew claws. He is getting ready to start training to be my husband's Service Dog. He is a giant goof ball, we havent had Loki around water yet but he loves to learn and picks up tricks really quickly.

When evaluating a newf at a shelter for rescue if the dog has double dew claws in the rear it is considered a mix with a Great Pry. Newfs typically do not have rear dew claws and definitely not double. If a 'breeder' (and I use the word breeder loosely) breeds newfs with double dew claws they are not purebred.

That being said he looks like a real sweetie. Enjoy him. I hope he is a good service dog for your husband. One thing about Great Pyrenees is they need a job to do so I think he will be a perfect fit for you house hold.

He learns really fast. He already knows to back up if my husband is sitting down and let my husband grab his collar then will slowly step forward to help him stand up. My husband does not put any pressure on him at all. He also has learned to open his out door kennel run gate only when asked of course. He only goes outside for a few hours at a time to potty and play and he has a feeder of food down as well as a bucket of water.
