In the classroom ...

Thanks Frank,
I have been working on this FOREVER... I do bring in the dogs for special units like my Lewis and Clark, my Old Dog Cora unit, My Lighthouse Dog unit, and a few others. BUT my school district is not WILD about my SPECIAL PROJECTS ALL OF THE TIME. I also do a unit on
Llamas in Pajamas. YES we all wear pajamas, I have TWO REAL LLAMAS in my classroom, and our whole weeks curriculum revolves around Peru, the Andes, real vs. domestic habitats, geography, diversity in cultures, costs of wool, differences in wool textures between sheep and llamas. We actually demonstrate how a Llama gets a haircut or shorn. Great lessons, but not highly accepted within my district. OH WELL I will keep trying.

They may not be highly accepted, but I'm sure your students love them. It's teachers like you that create that LOVE for learning in students. Keep it up!

It's kinda like the Rover Reading program that Erin did with Hudson. I wish we had it around us!! What a wonderful idea!

I wish more teacher used animals in the classroom. They can teachso much. I tell parents when the interview for my daycare...we have animals, sometime quite a few. a couple years ago I cared for a child who's dad had died in a car accident. this child hardly spoke to me and seldom to the other kids, but she would hold my kitty and talk to her!

Skylar and I did the Reading to Rover program and we also go to my sons 3rd gr. class once a week for them to read to her. It works great and we are getting nothing but positive feedback from it.

I thought the schools, especially in Illinois, were only concerned about their test scores. I'm sure your kids are going into that testing armed with experiential knowledge to figure out the questions, not just the rote memorization required to pass the test.

And yes, I know your pee wees don't take standardized tests, but it's you who's laying the foundation in a most excellent way. You're awesome(er).

You Know Leslie, the unfortunate thing is WE DO. There is the ISEL which is the Kdg. version of ISAT. Yes in Illinois we are way overboard in the TEST SCORES category. My own opinion. And you are NOT to implement any theme, curriculum, or mini lesson unless it fits into the State standards. If you noticed in my letter about the post card unit I linked my unit to at least 15 of those standards. If not it would have been taken with a grain of salt and possibly not at all accepted. I sometimes get really depressed over all of this. Making things link and make connections to real life, able to connect knowledge learned to more than just an isolated area, learning strategies, learning where resources are,LOVE OF LEARNING... I could go on and on..
Thanks for the words of support. You don't hear many of them. I am blessed as I hear some from the parents of my children. Not all mind you... but more than most.

My speech language goals have to be tied into state standards too! Imagine a school based SLP with 60 on her caseload doing that for each and every kid? No way. That's why all those IEPs are garbage as far as I'm concerned. They haven't made us do that for the audiology goals yet but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
