Baloo was like that...still is sometimes. What worked for me was to brush him for a minute only. Not really doing any good but getting him used to the brush. When he behaved....even if only for 30 seconds....I gave him a treat. Now at 5.5 months I can pretty well brush him all at one go.

You have to keep brushing him to get him used to it. You may have to hold his mouth closed with one hand and brush with the other. You can brush him when he is eating to make it a positive experience or even when he is sleeping. Holding a treat with one hand and brushing with the other will distract him and make it a more positive experience. He still is a baby and will outgrow some of this behavior.

This kind of ties in with obedience..have you started your pup in a 'good' puppy kindergarten? Also, there is some good advice in the book Super Puppy that helps with puppy training. In addition to puppy k, I do work my pups on the grooming table nearly daily to get them used to brushing etc. Filling a fabric nail apron with small easy to eat treats allows for quick access to praise the pup frequently and quickly while grooming. Just takes patience, time and persistance and you'll be amazed on how quickly your pup starts to enjoy being groomed. Need to make it as an enjoyable and positive experience as possible! Talk to them in a calm yet upbeat and praising voice when they're behaving correctly, too.

Good luck!

I waited till Charlie was REALLY tired, and brushed him really gently (with a boar bristle brush or a wide-toothed comb) when he was 8-10 weeks old. After that I switched to plastic pin brush, again when he was sleeping, then when he was awake but calm. However, sometimes he does decide grooming time is play time and will play-bow at me when I am trying to brush him, but he doesn't really nip or anything. It is just his way of telling me to play now and brush later when he is tired.

I had the same problem. Even giving a treat/filled kong didn't keep Cole from wiggling. So....I'd wait until he was REALLY tired and snoozing. Worked every time. He loves it now, but prefers I don't groom ALL of him....only the belly!

Great there is hope :groovy:

Tsunami is chewing everything in site and loves legs and arms and hands... I have been grooming him everynight (although the blower situation is another story:banghead: ) and he thinks that it is playtime or at least chew time. It is good to know that he is "normal" and I will have my arms and legs when he grows out of it

What worked for me was to break the task into 4 smaller tasks....Front Left-side/right-side and rear left-side and right-side. I did a quadrant each day for less than 5 minutes.
