How soon is too soon... or how long to wait?

I'm not sure that the whole "rebound" concept applies to dogs. With human interaction it is easy to fall into a bad relationships, but with our pets it is a completely different story. You are not going to suddenly realize in 6 months that you picked the wrong dog, or that your dog is racking up credit card debt in your name.

One of the greatest gifts God gave us was our capacity to love. You don't have to take back the love you gave White in order to give the same love to another puppy.

THIS. This sums it up perfectly. We got our Maggie after we lost our lab, who was the love of my life. My daughter handled losing her very badly, and was worried she wouldn't love the new puppy. One night I heard her in her room ( she would KILL me if she knew I told you guys this) talking to Maggie, she was showing her pictures of our lab, and telling her the things she had liked to do, and that she was going to do them with Maggie now.

You'll always have Black and White in your heart, but you'll have room for others too.

Great responses from folks, which I would echo. There is no "too soon" if you are ready. I've always thought that the greatest compliment you can give a dog who is gone, is to get another. "A new dog never replaces an old dog; it merely expands the heart". Don't know who wrote that but it is so true.

I will say it again. The price of such love leaves us bereft and heartbroken.. But .. they remain in our hearts and souls... And there are others to love and cherish. Not to replace.. and never be the same .. but precious nevertheless.. Sending you love .. and can't wait to see you in a few weeks.. Ironically it will be our Bear 13 1/2 who we will take joy in..

I live by this:
A Dog’s Last Will & Testament

Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, giving their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask…

To a poor and lonely stray I’d give my happy home; my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys; the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name.

I’d will to the sad, scared shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and the pain is more than I can stand.”

Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him.

This is the only thing I can give…

The love I left behind.

There is no set time. It's more has to do with each individual and when time is right you know it is.

I think you will know when the time is right, a new dog will never ever replace the one you lost but boy do they offer a distraction. You will love the new one too even if it's in a different way, they may not be your soulmate but just as with people you will love them for what they are and that love can be just as rewarding. I think when you do decide to add a new addition it will be one lucky pup to have such a wonderful loving happy family.

Each and every dog is different and you have to love them in different ways. Never a replacement. I think you are ready but only you will know in your heart.

So....puppy or rescue?? :whistling:
Well, I have to agree with Louise's quote below. These are truly words to live by.

Somehow each time we lost a dog, another one needed us...not sure if there is a right time. You do not replace the dogs you had, they are another dog, another one to love. it make the love you had for Black and White no different and you will still miss them and shed tears over them...i think it is great to give another dog or dogs to have the great opportunity of the love you have

There is no "too soon". There is only "this one is it". No matter where it comes from, be open to a new one, or two, or more as in our case. Right now we have three old dogs. We are ready to open that door to the possibility of a new member of the family. Just looking for the one that needs us. Who knows, we saw our last one on the evening news.
