The rule of thumb I aways here is can you feel their ribs? How about some in between snacks like veggies and fruit? Jake is 6 months old weighs 90lbs, I feed him 2 cups am, 2 cups lunchtime and 3cups in the pm. He always goes at the food like he is starving but he isn't obviously LOL. Jake is on the Wellness. Hope this helps. I am sure the more seasoned newf owners will give you some great info.

This question has bothered me as well. For awhile Brady was only eating 2 meals/day. Now he is back to 3. We feed him 2 cups with a very small amount of fish (sardines, salmon) or fruit and veggies. In the am and pm. At lunch about 1 1/2 cups with veggies or fruit. I also had chicken broth to the mix. Brady is 108 at just over 8 months. You can feel his ribs, when he is wet he looks skinny. We don't give him (I don't anyway) many treats. What I like to use is fruit (he loves frozen bananas).
We feed him Wellness too.

Okay, now y'all are worrying me. Bear eats 1.5 cups of rice a day and 3-4 cups of IAMS for now. We discovered today, that he LOVES oranges.
These bad for him?

Oh...will be 8 months old on the 27th and weighs 92 lbs.

The oranges should be OK, but the Iams has too much protein for a growing pup. You should try to find a food with 22% protein, so your pup will have a slow steady growth pattern.

Bear's love of citrus came to light when he stole one from the fruit basket and treated it like a ball. He eventually bit into it...and it was hell getting it out of his mouth after that. He *wanted* that orange.

It's been his only experience....but it's become necessary to put all oranges in the fridge in order to get him to leave the fruit basket alone.

As a long time feeder of Wysong, i think you are feeding to much.
my pup who will be 6 months is only getting 3 cups a day, and he could loose about 2 pounds right now.
depending if you are working your boy, i would back down to 3 cups.
maintenance has corn, corn puts on weight, if you can VERY easily feel the ribs and spaces inbetween the ribs he is ok.

So, sarahnewfie, three cups a day is about right? I am feeding elle wellness chicken(switching over from nutra nuggets, as I wrote in a previous question). I just had wanted to make sure she was getting enough, two weeks ago she weighed 13 lbs. We go to see the vet today, so I'll be able to see if she has gained any and how fast. Unfortunately we aren't seeing our vet because ours is out of town, until mid-August (she owns newfies and I just found her right before Elle came home. The vet is a naturopath and traditional vet...can't wait to meet her!). So, I figured I'd post to you newf-gurus to reinforce what I am doing. Since she was only 10 weeks old I didn't know if three cups a day was enough or not enough.
Thanks,
Ellesmom

Ellesmom, i have found the feeding guide on your bag of food a good guide minus 1 cup.
most of the feeding guides are over the amount required. seeing your pup is way younger, no your pup should not get 3 cups a day.

"IF" wellness is comparable to wysong.
look at your guide on your bag, if i recall correctly mine at 10 weeks were only getting a cup or a cup and a half total split into 3 feedings.

THanks for the reply. I had to take my poor pup to the vet as she is breaking out with puss welts. Unfortuntaley, her vet, a newfie owner, is out of town for the next six weeks. The back-up vet, from anothre practice, was nice and seemed to realize that she was having an alergic reaction. She suggested anti-biotics, but I told her I'd rather hold off and try dropping the treats I bought her and not putting any (organic) peanut-butter in her kong toy. Maybe there is something in them that are making her break-out. Also, Elle had two canines, teeth, that are dying. Little bugger has been chewing everything like crazy. I have been spraying anything that isn't supposed to be chewed with apple bitters. It definitely works, and I redirect her. But, the vet suggested that she is chewing the metal rails of her crate at night. It breaks my heart. I am going to call the stud's breedery to find out what she suggests. I am going to put my favorite pj's in the cage with her, it has my scent. Also, leave some soft music playing and maybe a warm water bottle. What do you think?? Sorry for all the questions.
But, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I sent for Judy Adler's puppy book last week, but it hasn't arrived yet. Can't wait until it gets here. My poor baby. I hope I am doing everything right! :(
She is getting along wonderfully with the cats and is really adjusting to the familly and visa versa. She is a great pup. The vet and vet assistant were surprised to see her white and black. Neither had ever seen a Landseer Newf before. But, as I said this isn't Elle's regular vet.
Anyway, just had to vent. My baby is sleeping. My son is being a great help, as much as a five year old can be. I am just sure to spray his jean legs with apple bitter so she doesn't nibble on him. Plus, I have been teaching to have a "strong, firm" voice with her, and not to get all giggly and wrestle. I don't want him to start something that he will regret when she turns into a full-grown newf! :D
Excuse, my book! *L*

PS Yes, the protein contact and fat content in Wysong and Wellness are similar. Both are pretty similar. Wysong uses soy in some of its products. Wellness doesn't. But, both foods wered recommended highly by the stud's breeder. Great foods the pair of them. I will cut back her food slightly to the 1 1/2 cup per day. She usually doesn't eat the whole thing in one sitting anyway. THanks again.

Hi elles mom, wysong synorgen does not have soy, but the growth does, i fed the growth canned to emmett for years, it had no ill effects for him, now he is on the canned meats no growth, i used the growth becouse he was working in SAR at the time.
anyway, as far as the teeting, get the rawhide chips, natural, harpers brand if you can, made in the usa, the other countries use syanide in the rawhides, so only buy the stuff made in the usa.
also, that will help the pain, and help the other teeth to break thru.
One thing i have found, if a puppy does not attack its foodthan it is getting fed to much.
a sure sign that the pup is being over fed.

Saranewf,
I remember looking at two dif. wysongs one with and with/out soy, you're right. I will take a look at the back of the bag and do as said. I was able to get a hold of the stud's breeder and she said yes, that I was over-feeding. (I only followed the directions of the dam's breeder). I'll check out those chewies you mentioned. Yes, my poor baby, hopefully that will help her.
Thanks for all the feedback. It is much appreciated.
Love this list.

I'm with Sarnewfie on this, I feed my 7 mo. old pup 3 cups a day, and it does seem like the recommendations on the bag are about a cup too much. I guess they want us to use it up faster - good for business - bad for thin dogs.
