holistic treatment for allergic/atopic dogs

I know some of you on this board have treated your dogs for allergies holistically when traditional medical management did not work. I'm interested in learning more about this, as I have an allergic dog, and I have a few questions:

- What were your dogs' symptoms? What is your dog allergic to?

- What did you treat with holistically? How long was if before you saw improvement?

- What veterinarian/other sources did you consult for the holistic treatment?

Thanks!

Well, I can't speak for dogs(yet, we just got our allergy case newfie) but my cat's story is becoming well known.

Symptoms, chronic itching, chewing, raw oozing bleeding sores, swollen eyes, torn up ears from scratching, coughing, wheezing and sneezing.

Our vet said he'd done all he could do and it might be "time".

We switched her to raw, stopped all vaccinations, stopped injections and meds (some she had to be weened from) did a complete herbal cleanse and immune support.

I can happily say that my cat is 95 to 98% today. She still gets puffy eyes every now and again, but her skin is healed and she's doing fine.

Now, she got worse before she got better (detox) and it took almost 2 years for her to heal completely but her personality came back within a few months.

If you'd like the "recipe" I started with, I'd be happy to share.

The only real problem we've had is with our Golden, Sasha. She's allergic to wheat, however other things (pollen, etc) will also set off a yeast infection in one ear. It was virtually chronic for years.

We've switched to a food for all of them with no preservatives, no wheat, corn or soy. Her treats have none of the above in them either.

And...after trying every antibiotic/antifungal ointment, cream, you name it...I wash her ears out with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water, which does the trick. DO not use this with inflammed ears...but once they're not irritated, clean them with this solution a couple of times a week. The yeast infection stays away.

The ears stay clean...no infections, no problem.

She also gets probiotics every day, and fish oil to help boost her immune system.

I've never seen a holistic vet with Sasha...however, I have spoken on the phone with our former vet, Dr. Carvel Tiekert who is the founder of the AHVMA (American Holistic Veterinary Medical Assn). He gave me food recommendations, as well as directed me to reading material.

Oops! Sorry I didn't answer your questions.

Dex had 5 hot spots simultaneously. We realized the culprit was lamb. He was so bad that we had him on natural hydrocortisone for awhile. With the nh we did start to see improvement quickl, along with eliminating the lamb.

I use not only an holistic vet, but also an herbalist.

N2N,

I can't give you all the medical mumbo jumbo, but it literally is a natural form of cortisone. It does not have the contraindications that the synthetic has.

But, it still is cortisone. So I tried to limit his time on it. And yes, you have to wean them from it, if they have been on it for awhile.

RandR,

Lo and behold, it was same day service. If I knew how to give you a link that you could just click, I would. But, computerism is rocket science. And I don't do rocket science.

Anyway, I have had a couple of replies. Go to:

pethealthpharmacy.com

Hopefully, you will get some of your answers. Also, my herbalist did reply and said that it is very similar to natural estrogen. I never heard of that either. But, that's why I am not a rocket scientist!
:D :D

HTH,

Sue
