Hip Dysplasia

Does anyone have a pup that has been diagnosed with HD before one year old? What did the xrays show? Did you contact your breeder and what was the response? What has been your decision about how to treat and future plans?

Yes. Bellevedere was just over one year when she was diagnosed. The vet said there is a good chance she would grow out of it and it seems she has. She'll be 2 May 26th 2001. I did not contact the breeder as she was a rescued dog. Her original owner/breeder left her at a kennel because she had black hair and they were breeding brown Newfies. We have her on a glucosamine and chondritin food called Nutro Natural Choice. However, she doesn't eat the dry food without beef cuts from a can. The gravy in the can must make the dry stuff more inviting.

Malia was diagnosed with the dreaded hip dysplasia at a young age. She is now almost 4 years old. We had films taken of her hips last month and arthritis set in bad. We are having her left hip replaced on July 3 this year. The breeder is offering us another dog for free but we declined for now. We already have our hands full with 2 newfies.

That Nutros Food already has the joint medication in it? That sounds good.

Are there any signs or symptoms to look out for, for hip dysplasia?

If you don't mind me asking, how much is the surgery for a hip replacement?

$4,300.00. I think it's because he's the only surgeon that can do it here. So basically, he can name his price. We live in Hawaii by the way.

Angus is our rescue and has severe displasia. When we found out, we decided not to tell him.
He is on glyco-flex, and we now are feeing him Wellness brand with fish meal and sweet potato. He was on Nutro Lamb and Rice, but decided last summer he no longer liked it and stopped eating it. Angus is now turning 10 in September (we think). He does not have all the flexibility that another dog might have, but when he is determined to chase a chipmunk, there are few signs that he cannot move.

All in all Angus is healthy with little signs of his slowing down. You can see pictures in the Newfie Photo forum.
