Hi Everyone,
My family surprised me with a 2 year old Newf on Christmas Eve. I have always loved this breed, have done a lot of reading on the web about them, and hoped to have one someday. My 13 year old lab/chow 4 legged soulmate had to be put to sleep last year around Christmas, and I swore I would never get another dog..too painful to let go as I'm sure some of you know. Anyway, now Dexter is here and I absolutely love him to pieces!! But I still have a lot of questions, because I am reading some conflicting info on the web with all of the different breeders and I just want to do what is best regarding exercise, feeding, training, etc.
This is Dexter's third home. His previous owner had him several months and had to travel so she put him on Craigs list and my daughter spotted the ad, the rest is history. She charged no rehoming fee for him, she just wanted him to have a good home. She warned that he could be destructive (separation anxiety) and so far he has broken several blinds and one window (thank God he wasn't cut..it was a miracle)
I took him to the vet and she wants me to try training before he goes on any anxiety meds. I walk him every night after work about a mile, she said I should walk him about 5 miles.
He also doesn't eat very much at all; is there a food that Newfies prefer?
I made an appointment to get him neutered. I read that some owners wait until Newfs are older to do this, and since he is two, is that a good age?
I can tell he has had some obedience training, because he walks well on a leash, sits, shakes and lays down on command. I would like to further his training, because he doesn't always come when he is called.
Also, he is suddenly mounting everyone he meets...will the neuter help this problem or is it a dominant behavior that he will always have?
I am going to do some more research, but I thought this would be the best place to start..I'm sorry for the long message. Thanks for any and all advice you can give me,
Ann

Welcome!I have no answers for you. I encourage use of a great kibble though, and lots of love! I am new to newfs as well but I am IN LOVE with mine-she is treated like on of our children. Good luck... Oh yes, use the search bar to look up specifics and you will find many threads with the information you are looking for.

Not sure where in upstate NY you are but Northland Newf Club is pretty awesome and would be a great resource for a lot of your questions. (you can PM me for info) I have to say though 5 miles a day seems a bit much for an average Newf. Mine get walked 1-2 /day totaling 1-3 miles.

Welcome from western Washington state:) That is great advice from Alicia. Your local newf club can help you with any questions/training issues and recommend a good giant breed vet.

Welcome to the forum, and very glad you've both found eachother :) Sounds like your going through the teenager stage, lots of training and teaching and I agree 5 miles sounds a bit much to me too. Food is always trial and error but I think most agree, a high quality is the way to go. I'm sure if you search in here you can find links and websites that can give some direction.

Welcome!! We also have a rescued newf, although Maggie was 4-5 when we got her. The local Newf club rescue group gave me a really nice reference with some VERY basic info on selecting a food, tools, training, etc. I can email it to you if you PM me. Your local newf club is a great place to start. They can recommend a good trainer, etc. and get you involved in some activities if you want.

There's a lot to learn, but you'll figure it out.

Good luck!

I have rehomed three Newfs. TWO of the three didn't want to eat until they settled in. I had to add part of a baked chicken in with their food to get them to eat.

As far as the mounting, I have had experience with that as well with the male Newfs. Turned out to be a dominance thing. They were testing their position in the new pack order in the house...

Welcome Ann! I'm so glad Dexter found you. From what you've written, it sounds like you just want the best for him. The folks here will help you get it all figured out. I've gone through the teen stage, dominance, humping, fence climbing and neutering at age two. For us, neutering helped only a tiny bit. It did not change his dominant personality. I think maturity helped more than anything. That is, at age 3yrs. he just doesn't do all the stupid things he did when he was 1.5yrs...sigh of relief.

Thank you everybody for your kind welcome and very helpful tips! After I wrote my introductory email, I searched the FAQs and learned more about the site (I probably should have done that first :) ) But I am so thankful for all of your replies. I will check out the newfoundland clubs and be sending some emails. Hope to post some pictures of Dex too!
P.S. and yes...I thought 5 miles at a time was a bit too much

Welcome from Newf Hampshire! Ya, he certainly does need time to settle in, however, I would think that neutering would help immensely.

Good luck! Please keep us posted!
