Here's a weird one - peeing while walking up stairs

Hi Gang, long story short a friend's daughter got a Newf puppy who's now about four months old. They've *almost* got him house trained, but for some reason he pees when he's walking up the stairs in the house. Heck, I'd be THRILLED to have a Newf capable of walking up a flight of stairs, but apparently it's getting super messy over there. Any ideas?

Thanks! - Michelle

Hm... If it was a female I would say some sort of muscular problem or deformity in the little girl parts. But with it being a male....Could be same issue though.
Have they brought it up to their vet?

Our lab would do this when he was excited...maybe that is all it is?? Not sure of why it would happen all the time.

Our something to do with the spinal cord? Maybe some sort of lesion on the spinal cord that presses on an area when walking up the stairs that causes him to leak urine?

I suspect the dog is leaking at other times too, it's just more noticeable when going upstairs. Could be an ectopic ureter although they're uncommon in males. Could also be a UTI. The pup should definitely be taken to the vet.

If he isn't showing signs of being really excited going upstairs I would definitely say it's time for a trip to the vets to find the cause. My old girl will "leak" on the steps some days but we already know she's incontinent other places also and just clean up a lot these days.

I'll just throw in that 4 months and stairs aren't the best choice for later joint health, but I do realize that everyone's situation is different.
