Help! In Season Again??

Cimorene is dripping blood again. She was just in season from Thanksgiving until the week before Christmas. Could she possibly be in heat again or is something wrong?? Thanks for any info. Everything I looked up online says 2-3 times per year.

Piper used to come in about every 3 months for her first couple of years. Then it slowed to every 6 months.

That's awfully fast to be in again...you might have her checked. That definitely falls into the classification of short cycling.

It is indeed a possibility. Nymiria was in 3 times in 9 months after which she was put on cheque drops. It (the short cycling) is probably worth asking the vet about if it continues.

I talked with my breeder and she mentioned a possible split cycle in which didn't ovulate the first time. It's been 9 1/2 weeks since she stopped bleeding back in December.

She's acting fine and doesnt seem sick, or that she needs to urinate more (UTI).

I don't feel that the swelling of her vulva ever went away...does it notably??

The vulva stays larger after the first cycle (puberty). So no, it likely won't ever revert back to the size it was before. Normally in a heat cycle it will become very large, soft and spongy as they approach the time they would be breedable, then will revert back down, but never back to puppy size.

See if there's a reproductive specialist near you. There may be something they can give her to straighten her out.

There's a board certified repro vet in Richmond, VA that we take Lucy to. Let me know if you need their contact info.

Did she stop bleeding after her heat cycle at Thanksgiving, and this is a separate cycle? You'll remember that Lucy had a prolonged cycle last year (mid-April to mid-July...dripping blood the whole time). Turned out that she had cystic ovaries, and needed hormone therapy to rupture the cysts to complete the cycle. She is now on mibolerone (prescription) to prevent any further cycles.

Thanks for all of the info everyone. Cindy -- that sounds about right. Thanks!

Laurel -- She bled constantly for 3 full weeks back in Nov-Dec. So this is now 9 1/2 weeks later. She hasn't bled in between. My breeder isn't concerned and thinks its just a split cycle for this first cycle. I guess I'll wait for now and see how it goes unless I see any problems with her. I didn't remember the problem with Lucy...wow. I'll keep your vet in mind in case we end up needing to see someone. Thanks!
