Happy Gotcha Day Tokota!

One year ago today I first laid eyes on TakotaHonaw! Of course that wasn't his name them. He had a host of issues but thankfully none were health related. I saw him posted for adoption in a newf group on FB and couldn't get him off my mind even though I wasn't looking for another dog. My old girl Ursa had been DX with cancer earlier that year and I also had a 3 year newf already.
When we first met, Kota literally charged me! I later found out that was the nicest he had greeted anyone. Takota was untrained, aggressive to people and dogs, high prey drive, separation anxiety and a few minor problems too. I knew he was bred in a mill so I was prepared to deal with poor temperament possibly for life.
Now one year later, TakotaHonaw (bear who is friend to all) has more than lived up to his new name! He is the gentlest, sweetest, friendly and secure boy. Every one of his problems was directly related to insecurity from lack of training! He loves to learn and work and is so eager to please. He is now completely trained when on lead and nearly trained (85%) off lead even with serious distractions! For a big boy (he was 23 months when I got him) with no socialization or training a year ago he has come so far already. O know we have many fun adventures coming yet. Goals for the coming year are getting into draft work and getting his CGC and CGCA. If things work out well I am even considering Rally or Obedience trails next year.
Happy Gotcha Day Takota! I can't imagine you not being part of our lives now. You fur sisters adore you and so does everyone who meets you.

A year in the life of a rescue (Takota)

What a great story with a very happy ending. It's amazing what training can do to build that special bond. So many people would have just given up on him, but you saw his potential and were willing and prepared to work with him. That's beautiful, just beautiful. I wish every troubled dog had a special person like you in his life.

Happy gotcha day Tonka...insecurity from lack of training strikes a cord in my memory. These dogs most especially benefit from structure and boundries. I'll be watching to see what else he can accomplish.
