Grooming your newf

I have decided to put a sticky on a thread that offers suggestion on links and other ways to learn to groom your newf

First off here is a link that is very good with photos http://www.logrus.trivium.blink.pl/groomingnewfengl.html

I also offer a grooming video showing how to groom your newf. I donate all proceeds to rescue or shelters. Just PM me for my address. I sell them for $25 which includes shipping. I will send them world wide but then the cost is $30 per video which includes air delivery. Editied to add: My DVD is offically retired. Please see the other sticky on Penny Shubert's online videos on Newfoundland grooming.

Also highly recommended has been the Mars Coat King. This tool is the ultimate in removing undercoat. You can purchase them at www.groomersmall.com You will get a floor plan of a mall. Click on the MARS COAT KING store. You will want to purchase the double wide 18 blade (course). I suggest you also order an extra set of blades.

Please post links here but do not clutter this link up with question

I love the marrs coat king too, but would caution it's use on a show dog... You can get the dog naked with this thing. The more you comb, the more comes out...Julie

The Mars Coat King is wonderful to use on show newfs. For example you can use it to take undercoat out of the neck area, sculpting the neck giving it a longer apprearance or showing your newf's true neck that is hidden under all that coat. You can use it to show the lay of the shoulder. It can be used to thin the coat under the chin giving your newf a 'throat' as well as more neck. You can also use it to smooth out lumpy or poofy areas on the body and legs. It is great on leveling a top line. Many times newfs will appear high in the rear only because of mass amount of coat on the rear end. Thinning out that area can show your newf's true topline.

I have 4 that I take with me to shows. I'd die if I forgot them. Yes too much use can make your dog naked as it will remove undercoat. But for the pet newf it is nice to remove that undercoat it keeps your newf cooler, easier to comb and maintain as well as helps eliminate so much hair in your house.

I too love it, but Brady is naked in places!!! Tim won't let me near him with it, do you blame him?? Thank goodness Wilbur is still a baby brushing is still not a chore with him.

I BOUGHT THE COAT KING RECENTLY BUT IT DIDN'T HAVE ANY INSTRUCTIONS WITH IT. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME KIND OF BLADE IN IT. I'M AFRAID MY DOGS WILL END UP BALD IF I USE IT MUCH. DOES IT REALLY ONLY TAKE OUT THE LOSSE UNDERCOAT?

You can use it too much. Just use it like a comb to get out the undercoat. Use your common sence and you will be fine.

How can I use this too much? It doesn`t loke dangerous. Is this just for removing loose hair or for more things?

Jeannie - tried to PM you. Are you coming to the National. If so, I thought I might get a grooming video from you & skip the shipping to Canada cost. Thanks.

I was just woundering is this easy to use??? all I have right now is a slicker brush. Not sure what I should all have for him to keep him looking nice. Thanks

Yes the MCK is easy to use. However for grooming you also need a good course comb and a pin brush. A slicker brush on the coat can break the guard hairs. I seldom use a slicker on the coat.

Jeannie - I gave your video I picked up at the National to my freind Gloria who loves to groom. She says it is very good. Said it was very easy to follow. I'll have to watch it if she doesn't offer to do my girls. :D

Dawn, I don't know who you bought your puppy off of, but obviously you trusted her enough to buy a puppy off of them. Just remember before you toss her advice down the drain, everyone has different opinions of what works, and she will know some things that work better for the lines that she is working with. Just a thought, nothing more (o:

After looking at the dogs and reading a lot of posts I am positive I need more practice with grooming these wonderful companions of mine.I bathe, dry, and brush just fine however my trimming stinks.
I live in an area where the groomers have no idea about grooming Newfs and have no desire to learn so I have been looking at pictures and reading..I practice on mine and someday I hope to get it right.Thank goodness for all of your helpful advice..
