Grass Eating

Jordan, who turned 4 in February, has suddenly taken up eating the spring grasses that are growing. He's never done this before. Not the older grasses that he's been accustomed to walking on over the last several years, just the new bright green sprigs. He doesn't vomit anything back up, normal stools. His health and attitude are good.

I have him on Evo's large beef, no grains, dog food, and a very good probiotic/digestive enzyme. Salmon jerky are his treats.

Is there something I can add to his diet that would be better, like parsley or something? I'm concerned about the consumption of chemicals and fertilizers from eating these grass clumps. He's not super consuming the grass, just a nibble here, there. Like a grazing horse.

Mine love the new sweet Spring grass and do look like a herd of grazing buffalo out there. I never put chemicals or fertilizer on my grass though. But come to think about it, it won't be a problem this year, since I don't have any grass left!!:banghead:

I used Concern Weed Prevention Plus this year - organic - corn gluten meal - natural weed control and fertilizer. I found it at Lowes. Safe for people, pets, and wildlife. I have grazers too.

Make sure that corn gluten meal isn't from China. Princess itches when she's fed corn so I couldn't use that stuff any way.

Well then, I guess I have nothing to worry about. But why all of a sudden? Up until he turned 4, never once looked at grass as a food source.

Gee, I thought mine were the only grazing Newfs around. Looks like this could be "perfectly Normal". I too have hardly any grass left. :banghead:

mine look like fuzzy cows in the yard, they love to eat grass and never suffer from it.
i like to add green beans and broccoli to their diet so that they are getting enough greens! but, well, i think it is a newfie trait!

Kyra loves to graze on the new sprigs. She looks like a Holstein cow munching on the grass.

I noticed here recently, Snuffles is starting to nibble on what little green has been popping up the last week or so. Snuffles tends to want to eat grass on our AM walk before he eats. Sometimes very little, and others like big mouth fulls. Now and then he throws it up before we even get home. Generally it seems like after breakfast, he doesn't eat any more grass till the next AM walk.

Elwood is a HUGE grazer. He looks like a cow chewing cud. Maple not so much... but she's started enjoying eating sticks like her brother. Their new thing is eating the spring mud. EW!

The other morning, I could not hardly keep Snuffles from eating grass on our before brekfast walk. I kept telling him, he was going to throw up. Well, about 2/3 of the way into our walk, he stopped, and had a strange look on his face. All of a sudden he starts to heve, and low and behold, he threw up a pile of grass. I think that was Wednesday, and he really hasn't tried to eat grass since.

Hehe, kind of like in my younger years, when I got throwing up drunk on some type of booze, it never tased good after that again. Maybe that is why I drink so little now??? :)

Mine all graze, especially in the spring. Echo will eat so much she throws up and then happily prances into the house. Then, she'll go back later and graze some more. Moonlight, Scarlett and now this week Starbuck all graze in the morning. It's a dog thing. I think they learn it from each other. I don't treat my back yard, so they're okay to graze.
