Gracie's OCD.. Long, sorry

Gracie has been back to the vet due to her right front shoulder being more and more painful. Though I was trying to avoid surgery, my vet suggested I take her xrays and get the opinion of an ortho. surgeon. So on Wednesday, Gracie and I took a long trek (1 1/2 hours) to see 2 different ortho surgeons, both in Pa and get their opinions on the situation.

The first doctor said she definately needed surgery, that the bone had flattened out too much and he suspected there was a "mouse" (fragment of broken off bone) causing additional pain. He manipulated her left shoulder while telling me it usually shows up in both shoulders, and we discovered that that shoulder was affected as well. :( He said he would do the right shoulder, and while she was under anest. he would xray all her other joints. She would be in recovery for 6 weeks, then probably needed the second shoulder done. So, now I'm standing there thinking to myself... 12 weeks recovery for a puppy. Wow, that's asking an awful lot of her.

Then off for another 45 minute ride to the second Ortho surgeon. She looked at the xrays, examined her and when she manipulated the left shoulder, she too said that both shoulders probably needed to be done. She said the way she does this is to put her under for the surgery on the right shoulder, doing xrays on the left side as well, and if it needed surgery, she would do both at the same time. She would send me home with detailed instructions (after a 2 day stay at the hosp. :( ) showing me exactly how much exercise she was to get each day for 2 weeks, then at that time, she'd be back for exam with her and she would probably be allowed to do most things she usually does. She believes less times under anestesia the better and explained that if she needed both shoulders done, only doing the right one would probably take the left shoulder from being a mild case to being an acute case due to weight bearing on the left more after surgery on the right. She'd rather have her recover once than twice. That from the first day, Gracie would be asked to use both her front legs only as directed by her, but using them from the beginning was very important. She said that she has discovered operating on both at once if needed was the best way to go for the dogs and she does it all the time now. So, I now had to make a serious decision.

I decided to go with the second doc. Reasons being she would tend to heal better if she doesn't have a "good" leg to run around on. She will have less recovery time, and she will go under anestesia only once if both legs need doing.

Called my vet, she got a little snitty because I went to a second opinion, and chose not her choice, but called me back later and straightened things out.
She admits that both are top of their field and she's comfortable with either.

She is concerned about Gracie's "psychy or emotional well being" having no good legs up front for a while and is calling my ortho doc to discus this today. She called her ortho doc. and discussed his eval of Gracie, and she now has more understanding of the situation and she wants to hear my ortho doc's reasons for doing both legs at once. She warned me that if she agrees with what my ortho has to say, that's fine, but if she doesn't agree about doing both at once after talking to her, she wants me to know I should not do the surgery.

We'll see. I hate the thoughts of going against my own vet, but I do believe going under once and recovering once is in Gracie's best interest in the long run. Maybe I'll be looking for a new vet? :(

Hopefully all will go smoothly. Gracie's surgery is scheduled for Monday.

Please tell me what you think, I'm open to your input.

Please keep her in your thoughts.....

I don't know much about this, but I do know that my vet also is a big advocate of going under anesthesia as little as possible and doing everything that needs to be done while the dog is under, instead of coming back for more surgery. The only reason why it sounds like it makes sense to do both at one time, is because it sounds like she should be using her front legs soon after surgery and one recovery may be easier than two.
Poor little girl! How did this happen? I hope everything works out for her whatever route you decide to take. Are you going to try the supplements first? Let us know how it is going.

Hi, Thanks to Karen, Gracie has been on heavy supplements for a couple of weeks. And I have great faith in these supplements. Unfortunately, Gracie's shoulder would not allow for the time it takes for the supplements to do their job. She can barely touch her right paw to the ground now and the left, being affected also, concerns me a great deal because of the heavy pounding it is taking.

My vet thinks this was started by a trauma ie. being thrown to the ground or running head first (shoulder first) into something, both by playing with the other pups.

Had we been given a break (the shoulder not worsening) I feel certain that the supplements would have improved her condition just as it has for Molly. But.... life takes it course without asking us how we feel about it.

Karen, I will contact you privately post surgery to get your suggestions on the supps Gracie will need for recovery. Hope you don't mind.

Please keep Gracie in your thoughts as she has surgery scheduled for Monday afternoon... and we all know anestesia is always a scrarey thing. Thanks.

Linda, are you going to do both shoulders or just one? Either way, I will be thinking of her and wish her all the luck for a speedy recovery. I agree with Karen, that she is young and healthy and should be able to make a full recovery.

Linda - We have not had to deal with anything so tough with our Bear or any dog before him, but it must be heartbreaking to watch her in pain. We will keep you both close in our thoughts and please let us know how everything goes.

Linda and Gracie...please know you will both be in my prayers and thoughts on monday. I have not had to go thru anything more than altering or hematomas(sp) with any of my dogs ***knock on wood*** but i can imagine your anxiety. We will all be here for you

Sending good thoughts your way for a successful surgery and speedy recovery...

I'll throw my 2 cents in for doing a "double" even though it's with a human instead of a Newfie.
One of my clients needed both her knees done and her doctor suggested doing both at the same time so she'd only have one recovery time. She went through with it and said the recovery was tough, but she's so glad she did it because thinking about going through it again would have made her postpone it or avoid it all together. After remembering what she told me, I think doing it at one time will be less stressful in the long run for all involved.

I'll be thinking of you on Monday. Please let us know how everything goes.

I agree with the two in one surgery. If you were to choose two seperate surgerys maybe Gracie would still be able to really get around and accidently hurt her repaired leg. Having both done may keep her down easier and than her healing may turn out to be quicker. You know how hard it is to keep these guys settled down so I think you'll be glad you chose the double.I hope everything turns out great and I'll say a prayer for you all. Good luck

hi everyone. thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. We are getting ready to take a very hungry :( little girl for her two hour ride to the surgeon. She's being very verbal about that empty food bowl and we plan to have her already loaded into the truck before we put food down for the other five.

DH and I are feeling more comfortable with the double surgery - if needed. We know it's best for her to do this once. And probably best for us too. And after speaking with Dr. Maletz personally, our family vet has given the surgery her blessing as well. That in itself has lightened my spirits. It's a very uncomfortable feeling to not have her support while doing something so serious. While we were out for a while yesterday, she left a very supportive phone message for me and I am so grateful for that.

Well, I guess it's time to get on the road.

Please keep these positive thoughts coming, Gracie and her mom and Dad thank you. I'll post as soon as the doctor calls us tonite with her first update.

This is Gracie's first time away from home :( . Wish I could climb into her crate with her at the hopital and spend the night.

Good luck! Keep us updated!

It's awful when you have to leave them somewhere, isn't it? We had to leave Rory at the vet for about 4 hours last week and I felt SO BAD walking away! Much worse than her, I think!

I wonder how Gracie is doing? I've been thinking about her since yesterday and hoping that the surgery went OK.

Maybe Linda will let us know soon.

Hi everyone, I was waiting to see if Linda was going to post but apparently she is busy with Gracie, but...........Gracie came through surgery well and only had to have one leg done the other was perfect. I will let Linda fill you all in with the details but I thought I would at least let you know she is probably home now and getting lots of lovings from her mom LOL.

Hi everyone, Thanks Di

Yep, whew, all went very well, the xrays showed her left shoulder was, as the ortho said, "perfect". And I saw it today and have to agree.... it's beautiful. So, all the worry over doing both at once was for naught.

Gracie is a real trooper. she's walking around, limping seriously, but still walking around. She's not allowed to play, climb steps except for bed, but walking on all fours is a must and she's doing it just fine. I bought her a BIG FLUFFY bed to snooze in while she recoups and she loves it. She rode all the way home from the hospital in it. Looked like a little princess.(which she is
)

Already she sneaked by me and climbed the porch steps (sunken porch) and then the deck steps... Oh boy, I really have to be more careful.

It was so stressful getting to the hospital this morning to pick her up. Traffic was terrible, forcing us to take side roads and it took 2 1/2 hours to get there..... TOO long when you need to get your baby!

She's on Cephalexin (antibiotic) and ..... rimadyl.... just for a few days. I asked if I could just use aspirin and the doc said she doesn't like what she knows about rim. either, but that this is only for 3 to 7 days. And that she is under-dosing her. That the rim is truly what she needs for now, but it's not long range so we will be ok. I take her at her word. Not happy, but accepting this for the short term usage.

Thank you all SO much for your kind thoughts and prayers for our baby. I know they helped and we are all grateful to you wonderful people.

Yippee!!!! It's over and it can't ever come back... we're through with it forever!!!!
