We have attended three water workshops at Colonial Newf Club. Normally you will have your first session in the morning on basic obedience and an overview of the WD and WRD program. You might be divided in groups and do some land exercises. You will probably see the instructors give a demonstrations of the water exercises and then you will have the opportunity for doing water work...retrieving a bumper, take a line etc. depending on where your dog is at. I found Sunday more of practicing the skills you learned on Saturday and maybe watching a demo on WRDX (amazing!!!!)
I know we are having a water workshop with Barbara and Roger Frey this weekend with BMNC and Colonial is having one June 19th and 20th.
I'm sure you'll have a great time and met many Newfs and their families!

Yes, this is the one I am going to, the one with Barbara and Roger Frey down near Kingston.

So...what does one wear? Land clothes, water clothes? Both?

Oh great....Barry and I will be there as stewards. You need to have water shoes or old sneakers and must have a life vest. You should be in water clothes and plan on getting wet. You should have a water floatable bumper and bring lots of treats.

Great! We'll see you there!

I noticed on the flyer that it said we needed a life jacket for me and if we had water rescue equipment we could bring it...including a life vest. Difference between life jacket and life vest?

No just different wording! Make sure you ask for Barry or Linda...we will help you get your bearings. Your pup is young...right?
Yes, he's 8 months. He's been in water plenty of times, but never will go in over his head. I'm hoping he'll eventually be a swimmer.

We'll definitely ask for you!!

Training collar usually means choke chain. We don't usually use them in the water but have used a prong on Mr. Obnoxious Mojo. Ours usually just wear their regular buckle collars and the prong goes on if necessary. Outside the water we will use a choke or prong depending on what we are doing. We usually attach a long line to the dog so we can make corrections etc.

Linda, will you and Barry be going down to the Colonial one this year?

Donna... I used a flat buckle collar... depends the type of collar you usually use. Some like to bring and extra since you will be in the water and the one will get wet.

Dress like your going to go swimming in the lake... PFD.. water shoes are great too. Bring bumpers... rope.. water for your dog.. they normally like something like a crate to put your dog in on "down time.

Treats that can go under water/ get wet. Some regular ones that are used are hot dogs and meat balls. They work great if you get them out frozen in the morning. Some of the other treats disintegrate in the water... learned that one the hard way when I went.

Have fun.. they are normally very educational. I wish we could do the whole Colonial Newf Club this year, but I have a prior commitment one of the days. They changed the dates and the instructor this year. :(

Just attended my first one today. We had a great time even in the drizzle. It was a lot of fun and a great learning expereience.
The best part is, that although Sam loves the water and plunges right in, he comes to a complete stop as soon as he can't touch the bottom and just goes parallel to the shoreline........but today he actually swam...a few times.. I was so excited :groovy:
(He had never been swimming before I got him).
He was even much better behaved, comparatively speaking, in contrast to the weekly fiascoes displayed at the draft classes!!!
I hope it wasn't just a trick, the behaviour that is, and it is safe for us to go back for day 2 tomorrow!

(Connie and Tracy are teaching it)

We had a blast last summer when we attended our first water training class. The only thing that surprised us was needing a life vest for our pup. We had everything but that. The nice thing is that others brought their old jackets for beginners like us. They were even selling little water workshop kits like the bumper, ropes with knots, nylon leash, etc.
It is a lot of fun and there should be lots of people with experience to help you achieve your pups goals. We got lots of advice and tips for Morgans training. Also found people in our area who do water training on the weekends and during the week.

Here are just a few pictures of our 1st water workshop!! Will be in June again this year!! Hopefully we will be able to make it this year as well!!
