giardia questions

Those of you who have experienced this...if you had multiple dogs, did others get it or just one? Both of mine have it. Were you able to isolate the source? How long did it take before you began to see improvements? How, or did you, decontaminate your house? yards? This is getting old fast!

It comes from contaminated areas. Yards, ponds, puddles, lakes, streams, etc. It gets contaminated from feces of wild animals or other pets. If they're both in the same infected area, they can both get it. Or if they're poop eaters........

Ours have never had it. so I can't help much, but one thing you need to do is to make sure you also double check if there have been more incidents (than normal) of Lepto in the area. That also comes from contaminated water and if it's been very wet or rainy in your area, the chances of runoff into normally clean water supplies is much higher.

If they're seeing more Lepto...make sure your dogs are UTD on their vaccination for it. If not...that's good.

I had a friend with giardia who had no clue where she got it. Never went camping or swimming in any kind of water that "should be" contaminated.

It took her a couple of weeks on Flagyl (which is metronidazole) to get rid of it. The Flagyl was hard on her .. she said it was worse than the giardia.

I notice in the other thread you mention yours are on Panacur (which is the most acceptable treatment for giardia), but perhaps you might want to ask your Vet about the Flagyl/metro if you aren't seeing an improvement?

Don't know how you decontaminate, but here's what I found:

The most readily available effective disinfectant is probably bleach diluted 1:32 in water, which in one study required less than one minute of contact to kill Giardia cysts. Organic matter such as dirt or stool is protective to the cyst, so on a concrete surface basic cleaning should be effected prior to disinfection. Animals should be thoroughly bathed before being reintroduced into a “clean” area. A properly chlorinated swimming pool should not be able to become contaminated. As for areas with lawn or plants, decontamination will not be possible without killing the plants and allowing the area to dry out in direct sunlight.

My sister's whole family had to be treated for giardia years ago. Their house was on a pond and their yard was constantly full of Canada geese..and their droppings. Of course little kids put fingers in mouths, etc. They treated everyone with meds, fenced the yard to keep the geese out and did a major clean up. It was awful.

Gandolph had it when we got him from rescue.......too 3 treatments to get rid of it...the metro did the trick........we bleached the ground everytime he pooped....first picked it up and the bleach.......we even dug around the area lightly so mix the bleach.....what a pain......the other 4 didnt get it. But I did keep their paws extra clean after going out just to be sure. Its nasty nasty stuff , I hear tell even the frozen temps dont kill it. Hope all turns out well. Gandolph has no after effects from it.....he was 4 months old at the time.

Tsunami and Typhoon both had it. Very nasty stuff. I feel your pain. We had to do as Erika stated, pick up poop immediately, bleach the area, wash and clean every toy, food dish, and water bowl. It took a few treatments of Panacur from the vet. Make sure that you and your family wash hands constantly!!! It is that contageous. Hope you get it under control quickly.

Zuzu had it when we got her; Cooper never got it and neither did we, even though it took 2 bouts of metronidazole to get rid of it. At least, I think she's rid of it now, we have to bring in another sample this week to be sure. (She never had diarrhea, but it showed up in her stool sample and again in a re-check a month later).

Agree with the others on picking up poop immediately, washing hands a lot, making sure kids don't play where the dogs poop, that kids wash hands after petting the infected dog or touching its toys, etc. (cause kids tend to put hands on face/in mouth more than adults do, though adults should wash hands quite often as well and always before eating).
