Someome posted about giving garlic for fleas.. There was a specific kind mentioned, and I have not been able to find it. Will other kinds work? And how often do you give it? every day?, monthly ? I am anxious to try it..

Julie,
I think adding a bit of apple cider vinegar to the drinking water will do the same thing.

And it is much safer for the dogs than garlic (which should NEVER be fed to pregnant bitches, by the way).

It was me. I give one garlic pill daily, the make I use is Kwai. I can't stand the smell of garlic and this one is odorless.
Don't know about pregnant bitches. I have never given frontline etc etc. Just one garlic a day.

Angela, I have read that feeding garlic to pregnant bitches can cause miscarriage.....Though I have no actual experience with the matter.

Thanks Angela..what I am giving is 1000mg..does that sound right? I have given everything under the sun and can't get on top of my fleas with the landseers..Blacks seem fine..??? Will let you know...and Anita, thanks for the heads up on the pregnant bitches...no one pregnant here at this time, but good to know. Oh, and I had a lixit built right into the house when I constructed it,so no way to add to the water..but thanks for that tip too.. Does that work for you? How much do you add per gallon?

I just treated all my pets with advantage and capstar--but would like to continue forward with the garlic. My poor pets are so miserable with all these fleas. Vacuuming and powderin the carpets and furniture in the next couple days.

Yep, we're having a flea problem this year too. I have found that Comfortis works wonders...but we still have to treat the environment - the house. I just fog/flea bomb instead of spraying/powdering. The foggers also kill the eggs (or sterilize them) so it's the easiest.

The Frontline alone isn't doing it. Ugh I'm going to try some garlic tablets. No pregnant bitches here either. Comfortis will have to do for the cats. It's hard enough trying to give a pill once a month, nevermind once a day. LOL

Tried a garlic based natural flea deterant (flee flea) here last year and it was hopeless, gonna stick with frontline in summer but might try the garlic pills as an xtra defence

I know this won't help anyone in an apartment or someone with a large amount of property, but Shawn and I dispersed nematodes in our yard that specifically target flea larvae (amongst our other nematodes). Something to think about in the future...

horrible persistent fleas

Fleas here this year are awful. Horrendous. Orka is allergic and between the fleas and blowing his coat has been scratching non-stop. Pyrate has fleas but Barbossa for some reason is ambrosia to them and has been infested. Never seen anything like it, horror movie awful. The cats lick the Frontline Plus off each other. I have to flea comb both of them several times a day. Got Capstar. Orka has a vet appt today, will get Comfortis. Going to flea bomb the house tomorrow. Bought another Dyson vacuum to ensure able to vacuum every day.

Just dosing the Frontline doesn't do it. This is all out war! Must add everything possible to arsenal.

Strangely, the neighbor's outdoor cat that lives in our yard has zero fleas.

WE have rarely had a flea problem like this year...Simone has flea allergies, and I think maybe Pip does two..The two black boys not so much... They get comfortus every month, plus ivermectin, and sprayed every few days..Still the agony persists. I will gladly try the garlic along with everything else. It is easy to put a capsule in the feed. My house is never empty of dogs to bomb it.

I use Bug Off by Springtime.com It's dried garlic in a powder form. This is my second season using this product and I haven't had a problem with ticks or fleas. I found two ticks on Henry but they didn't attach themselves so I could just pick them off. I don't have cats and I think that is one of the reasons I have been successful with using this product. Fleas really seem to be drawn to the felines.

I had heard about garlic not being good for dogs so I checked with my vet and was told you would have to give them massive quantities for them to be affected. It apparently can change the blood chemistry on the rare occassion for some dogs. I have a complete blood chemistry analysis down on the dogs for their yearly exam so if the garlic was going to affect them in this way I will see it.

Fleas bad here too, especially with my cat. I have had success with diamotaceous earth inside my home. It's okay to use around my kids and dries up fleas once they come in contact with it. The hard part for me is keeping it in the carpet long enough for it to be effective...it kills me not to vacuum for a week or more.

Knock on wood, with the combo of Vectra 3D and the nematodes, we've not had a flea or tick issue since bringing Mila home. That said, if we ever did have a problem in the home, DE would be the way I'd go too. Glad to hear a first-hand NNer experience with it!
