My mom saw an ad in the (pulbication removed in order to protect the dog from the unknows of the internet. Jeannie): Free to a good home, 5 yr. old female Newfoundland so I called and left a message this a.m. I don't know that I'll ever get a call back, but if I do what should I say? I have no plans for another dog as yet.

First, you should contact the nearest Newf club rescue and ask if they know about this dog. Some people are reluctant to work with rescues because they have misconceptions about what will happen to their pet, but I would let the club handle this, if possible. They have the resources and expertise in case the dog has issues or health problems.

For now, if they call back, just express a genuine interest and ask some general questions about the dog. Is she friendly, housebroken, any health problems, etc. Don't challenge the person. You can say you'll get back with them as soon as you discuss this with your family. In other words, you can string them along for a little bit until the club gets involved.

I spoke with the woman again tonight. I told her my husband would not agree to another dog. I then told her about our local Newf rescue group. I shared a few positive rescue stories. She admitted she never thought of a Newf rescue group and she would certainly look into it as she really wants Emma to go to a good home.

The owner said she gave Emma to someone who responded to her first ad, but she was returned since she couldn't get along with a Rottweiler puppy. That's when she called me. My mom said the ad is re-posted, but I believe that was done before she talked to me. I believe our local Newf rescue will make an attempt.
