anyone use rabbit as raw diet food? Also a salesman told me to feed whole rabbit. Would rather grind it up first though. Any sugestions for a grinder that will handle raw bones?

I don't use rabbit. But, I would imagine the bones are not as tough as turkey neck bones. I have an American Eagle commercial grinder with 3/4 hp. It is kind of pricey, but again it depends on what else you are going to grind.

I've fed my 5 year old rabbit before and she did not seem to enjoy it as much as her fish, chicken or venison - go figure? Its too expensive for me to feed regularly anyhow. I didn't grind it up but I did hack it into smaller pieces and made it last 2 meals.

If you don't want to spend a thousand dollars - many raw feeders get their grinders from here:

http://www.sillypugs.com/g50.html

People used to purchase them from Northern Tool - but the grinders that they sell now are plastic and cannot handle the bone. Also keep in mind that none of the grinders "claim" they can process bone...

I have a big 2 HP because I grind product for sale... but I always feed my dogs whole product whenever possible.... In terms of rabbit - out of 3 dogs - I have only 1 that will eat it...

saddust,

I didn't look at the site you referenced. But, the American Eagle I have cost (at that time) $475.00 plus s+h. So, it is kinda pricey, but not near $1000.00.

Mine handles the bones just fine. What I do though, is hack the t. necks into smaller pieces (not itsy bitsy, but 3 pieces out of a tom neck)so as not to overtax the machine. I usually am dealing with the tom necks vs. the hen necks. And I usually am grinding 30 lbs. at a time.

My beasts don't eat it. Period. Ground or otherwise. They love lamb though.

For grinding, I use a Maverick grinder. I think it was around $200 at the most. Lots of people on the raw paws website use them. Mine's 3 1/2 years old and I've never had a problem. I just use a meat hatchet cleaver thingie to hack it into pieces that will fit and then grind it. but I mostly just use it for the turkey necks for the cats.

Sorry - I was referring to the grinder the link above pointed to... :D

Mine handles bones fine as well - as did the smaller one I had before - but none of the grinders warranty against grinding bone - purely pointed out for reference...
