Flease!?

Fleas!?

You guys. I think Moose might have fleas. Help! Advice, how to know, how to treat, etc. (Shaving the whole dog - while tempting, is not an option). He won't stop itching his head and neck and biting his paws.

I searched in his fur but could only find white things on his head, so I'm not sure if it's fleas or just dander, he's pretty flakey and dry skinned.

Oh bless, is he frontlined already, if not that's what we use and it's always worked for us. It depends how many he has and how long before u noticed them. I would maybe get some spray and spray wherever he lies most. Years ago my dog had them really bad, to the point where every morning I would wake up with a bite or 2 on my legs we had to flea bomb the house, but it did get rid of them xxx good luck xxx

Just one more thing you didn't need. Sorry to hear about the fleas but there are lots of flea treatment options out there. I have used Revolution too.
Let us know how it goes, always thinking of you guys.

Thanks guys. I found a vet open on Sunday (a rarity in Utah) and they can get me some Revolution. Ollie and Ginger show no signs of fleas, Moose has had them for maybe 2-3 weeks that he's really been itchy? Poor guy...Seems like I have the worst luck when it comes to him.

I'm going to get some Revolution, something for the cat, and then use diatomaceous earth on the carpets and wash all bedding. I'm hoping since it hasn't moved to Ollie or Ginger (or me, even though I keep scratching my head out of fear!) that they won't be too hard to kill. Any advice, tips, routines are more than welcome!

This is the last thing you and Moose needed!! :grrr: I unfortunately don't have any advice. I think our cat use to bring in the fleas and we haven't had a flea problem in the last 16+ years.(haven't had a cat in 16+ years) Coincidence or just luck? I don't know. Best of luck and I hope you, Ollie, and Ginger are OK and that Moose is flea free in no time.

Thinking about it - our cat was a daytime outside cat and would come in at night to sleep. Never wandered from the yard, just loved to sunbathe.:) I'm sure that didn't help and I bet that caused her to be an open door for fleas. (sorry - didn't want you to think I was blaming Ginger)

Get some Mule Team Borax. Kills fleas, and larva. Sprinkle on any carpets, along baseboards, etc. Let sit for several hours, or overnight, then vac it up. Non-toxic. Also freshens carpets, so there's a bonus to using it!

Yuck! Sorry you've got to deal with that!

A good friend just went though that, so here is what she recommends:

1. Flea bath - kills the fleas immediately (most groomers will do this with better stuff than you can get at home, less toxic, etc)
2. Treat with frontline/revolution/etc - keep doing it every month! (I treat Maggie year round, the cats only in summer since they don't go outside. We use Vectra 3D which is cheaper than the other stuff and works well here (fleas & ticks, etc).
3. Treat everyone (all the dogs and your cat) so the pesky fleas don't jump to them when you kick them out of Moose's fur.
4. Treat your house, just like you said. Put that stuff everywhere you can get it - don't forget about the furniture. And wash all the bedding, etc on hot. Don't forget his plush toys too.

Good luck!

Aubrey....I can't believe it would be flees as it is sooo cold here in Utah this winter that they wouldn't survive...unless he went somewhere inside that had flees that hadn't been treated. Flees are black and jump...good luck in finding a solution...all that fur and flees will not be an easy task to get rid of...

Anyone have experience with lice? These little suckers look tan, and I'm finding white eggs in his hair. Google tells me it's lice...

Google "walking dandruff in dogs". Photos as well...

Ew. Looks similar only his is on his neck and not his back, and he has no red spots. The vet will tell us tomorrow what it is...

So far they all look dead but he's still itchy. I've combed a lot of them out of him...they died during his flea/tick/lice bath (with dawn dishsoap) and I used the DE everyone recommended on here.

Oh, poor Ginger! My cat, Bonnie, would be having a fit!
She mewled like we were killing her but didn't try to scratch or hiss...and now is here loving on me. Thankfully she forgave me a lot quicker than I thought! I was ready for a few months of the silent treatment.
